The attendance figures and analysis in the annual TEA/AECOM Theme Index are the closest our industry comes to having "official" attendance figures for the world's major theme parks- and these figures are still mostly estimates. That said, the attached from Blooloop shares a list of "the world's top 10 theme park operators" based on those figures from the 2023 TEA/AECOM Theme Index. Note that those numbers reflect 2023 so they consider the legacy Six Flags and Cedar Fair chains figures from before they merged into the new Six Flags Entertainment Corporation.

I'm going to miss the Mirage. After 35 glorious years, it's closing soon - volcano, lagoon, aquarium and all - eventually to be replaced with a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and a 700-foot-tall guitar-shaped hotel tower. Following a couple of decades of stagnant growth and little innovation along the Las Vegas Strip in the 1970s and 80s, the Mirage signaled a new era of hope and hospitality in Las Vegas and spurred a rash of mega-resorts after its opening in 1989. Many doubted it would survive the estimated $1 million a day it needed to rake in to service the debt on its $630 million price tag. Steve Wynn and his team proved the naysayers wrong and made a fortune that eventually led to Wynn's development of Treasure Island, Bellagio, Wynn, and Encore in Las Vegas as well as casino resorts in Macau and Boston. Much like Caesars Palace at its opening in 1966, the Mirage upped the ante and expectations for Las Vegas casino hotels. These iconic resorts became attractions unto themselves and helped evolve a desert gambling destination into the full-fledged, entertainment and hospitality world capital it is today. Sadly, the Mirage will become a true mirage, joining the likes of once-thriving casino resorts in Las Vegas that have become distant, dusty memories of a bygone era - the Dunes, Landmark, Sands, Frontier, Stardust, Desert Inn, Hacienda, and El Rancho to name a few. The Tropicana is next up to be imploded, after an eternity-for-Las Vegas, 67-year run on the south end of the Strip, making way for a new baseball stadium for Major League Baseball's Athletics. Out with the old, in with the new. They call it progress. But as I grow older alongside these aging resorts, I appreciate and yearn for the joints that once ruled the Strip more than I anticipate what's new and on the way. #LasVegas #Resorts #Hospitality #Innovation

Disney Expansion Effort Clears Final Hurdle 🚧 DisneylandForward, Disney’s $1.9 billion expansion effort, received final approval in a unanimous vote by Anaheim’s city council on Tuesday night. Changes to the resort can begin 30 days after the vote. And with this vote, Disney also takes control of three public streets, including Magic Way. About the proposed expansion: Two of Disney’s current parking lots will give way to new theme park attractions, retail, dining and hotels and to accommodate the increased guests Disney anticipates the expansions will bring, they are set to construct a parking structure on the west side of the Disney property. The DisneylandForward plan will not expand Disney’s footprint beyond its current area in Anaheim but instead allow for mixed use “immersive experiences.” What’s in it for the city? “Anaheim is projected to see $15 million to $244 million in additional yearly revenue at complete buildout of what’s allowed under DisneylandForward,” according to a city press release about the approval. Disneyland’s expansion would also bring additional investments from Disney: $30 million for affordable housing, $8 million for Anaheim parks, as well as $45 million for street and transportation improvements and $10 million for sewer improvements along Katella Avenue, according to city staffers. ✍️ Yusra Farzan 📸 Courtesy of DisneylandForward

🌟 Las Vegas: Evolution from Everyman Appeal to High-End Haven 🌟 Las Vegas is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting its focus from broad-based appeal to high-end luxury, as detailed in a recent article from The Times. The Mirage, a pioneering property on the Strip, set the stage for this evolution. Josh Swissman, MBA, Founding Partner & Managing Director of GMA Consulting, perfectly encapsulates this transition: “It’s the end of an era but the beginning of a new one. The Mirage was a transformative property, the first truly integrated resort on the Las Vegas Strip that laid the foundation for all of the development that came after it.” As visitor preferences and requirements evolve, so too must the offerings on the Strip. This dynamic shift ensures Las Vegas remains a premier destination, continually relevant and enticing to travelers worldwide. However, the high costs of building new hotels necessitate a focus on the higher end of the market, further driving this luxurious transformation.
