In continuation of my last post, here are some fantastic employment prospects for students studying environmental sciences who are wondering what to do with their subject of study; #Environmentalconsultants offer expert advice to clients in regards to how to manage environmental issues and reduce a company's overall carbon footprint. They may measure a client's current levels of environmental contamination and devise systems how to eliminate future environmental damage. #Environmentalgeologist analyze and collect data related to the geological components of the environment. They may study minerals, soil and groundwater as well as assess industrial work areas such as mining operations. #Environmentalhealthofficers work both in the public and private sectors to help maintain proper environmental standards. They may monitor and enforce various environmental and public health standards such as safety at work, pollution control and injury prevention. To further enrich your chances of gaining employment in an environmental organization, it is pivotal to have the following skill set; 📌problem-solving and creative thinking skills. 📌competence in developing arguments from scientific, ethical and philosophical perspectives. 📌research skills and the ability to gather, analyse and report on complex environmental data. 📌laboratory skills for analysing environmental data. 📌written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills. 📌flexibility to work in all kinds of environments. 📌numerical and IT skills, developed through the application of statistics and measurement techniques. 📌planning, time management and project-management skills. 📌the ability to work as part of a team on projects, as well as independently. During National Science Week 2024, the EPA are celebrating some of our high achieving scientists. David Palmer is a Senior Environment Protection Officer - Water Quality, working in the EPA’s Environmental Science Branch. 📊 Why did you want to work in the science field? After a complete career change, I was very keen to embark upon something completely different that would challenge parts of my brain I hadn’t used since school. I viewed the Environmental Science field as a good mix of field work and office-based activities in an area which I was passionate about. 🛶 What is a typical day in your role? It could range from sampling and monitoring of local creeks and rivers in relation to a pollution incident, to evaluations and auditing of large-scale environmental harm. The methods of sampling are quite varied, so I could be in a pair of waders, on a boat, a kayak, or hovercraft! My office time is used to undertake environmental assessments and write scientific reports. 💬 What advice would you offer someone who is interested in a career in science? I think it is important to be open to taking opportunities when they present themselves and be willing to follow those opportunities to wherever they may take you. The journal Environmental Communication is now open to proposals for Special Issues. Scholars working in countries in the following continents are particularly encouraged to apply: South America, Central America, Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East. Issues should include approximately 8 essays. The timeline is no less than 20 weeks from the initial deadline for authors, though that means one could complete a Special Issue in a year. Special Issue topics might come from open calls for papers, conferences, collaborative research collectives or labs, policy working groups, or more. We are particularly interested in themes that are cutting edge in their timeliness or expanding relatively under-represented topics in the journal to date. Special Issue (co)editor responsibilities include:  - signing a contract  - soliciting manuscripts - editing manuscripts: SI editor(s) should read all the submissions and provide authors with feedback in relation to the theme of the SI (and anything else of note) - assigning reviewers - making decisions for authors on revisions in light of those reviews - writing a brief introduction to the Special Issue - keeping the journal Editor in the loop on your timing, as the final review will be read by the Editor prior to publication If you are interested, email the Editor (Prof. Phaedra C.
