The Horizon Europe Project SuRE "Sustainable, Reliable, and Efficient Floating PV Power Plants," coordinated by the IFE, officially kicked off in Norway! 🌍🚀   This 3-year HEU Innovation Action brought together 11 partners from 7 countries for its launch event. Two productive days of discussions about the project’s implementation were followed by a tour of the IFE Solar Labs for consortium members.   The SuRE project (SUstainable, Reliable, and Efficient) is focused on tackling the key challenges of Floating Photovoltaics (FPV), critical to Europe’s transition to a climate-neutral future. SuRE aims to: - Enhance sustainability by minimizing potential negative impacts and enhancing positive impacts on biodiversity, and ensuring compliance with end-of-life requirements. - Improve reliability by developing and testing FPV components that meet structural and functional demands throughout their lifecycle. - Boost affordability by reducing the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) from FPV power plants, making renewable energy more accessible.   The project will be coordinated by Josefine Selj and Mário Silva from IFE.   A big thank you to all participants for your insightful presentations and shared enthusiasm! Reflect Orbital, a California-based startup, is taking a giant leap toward a sustainable future with their groundbreaking project: "Sunlight on Demand." ‼The innovative idea? A fleet of 57 small satellites equipped with highly reflective Mylar mirrors, designed to extend the operational hours of solar farms by providing an additional 30 minutes of sunlight — even after sunset or before sunrise! This could revolutionize the way we harness solar energy, making it available when it's needed most, especially during early mornings and evenings when electricity demand peaks.📈 By reflecting sunlight directly to solar panels, this technology promises to enhance the efficiency and profitability of solar power generation, potentially accelerating the transition to greener energy sources. 🌞 However, the journey is not without challenges. Weather conditions, seasonal variations, and potential environmental impacts such as light pollution are all factors that Reflect Orbital is actively addressing. The company’s successful tests, simulating the satellite mirrors with hot air balloons, have shown promising results — generating "500 watts of energy per square meter" of solar panel! With plans to launch the first test satellite in 2025 and over 30,000 eager participants already on board, Reflect Orbital's "sunlight on demand" could be a game-changer for the renewable energy landscape.
