The report is out!!... We have been collaborating with a team of Architects, Engineers and Quantity Surveyors to assess the Victorian Housing commission towers that have been earmarked for demolition by the Victorian State Government. There has been a bit of back-lash behind this decision, particularly with the lack of transparency with respect to how this decision has been made. The RRR report (Retain Repair Reinvest – Flemington Estate: Feasibility Study Alternative Design Proposal) has found that significant cost savings can be achieved through strengthening, repairing and upgrading the buildings. In addition, retainment of the buildings will result in a far superior social outcome for the building occupants. We have been honoured to provide input from a Structural Engineering perspective to determine the code compliance of these buildings which were originally constructed in the 1960s. The design and detailing has been found to be lacking at various locations, however all are solvable given structural intervention and retrofitted strengthening works. From an historic point of view, the construction and history of these buildings are fascinating and a representation of the beginnings of the pre-cast concrete revolution that has resulted in the sophisticated construction techniques we are accustomed today. What's Happening in #Tampa / #StPete: Plans for a mixed-use tower overlooking Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa are moving forward! TLR Group has revised its vision for the project at 601 N. Ashley Drive. The updated plans now feature 600 apartments (an increase from 480), 46,000 square feet of office space (previously 68,000 square feet), and 11,000 square feet of retail space (down from 12,000 square feet). The tower is set to rise 48 stories, up from the originally planned 43 stories! Key players in the project include Coastal Construction Company as the general contractor and Arquitectonica as the architect. Matthew Femal of Kimley-Horn is overseeing civil engineering, with TLC Engineering Inc. handling mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design. Thornton Tomasetti is the structural engineer, Walker Consultants is managing parking design, and DH Griffin is tasked with demolishing the existing 12-story office tower on the site.
