This is a bit of a rant, but I'm also interested to know if others feel the same (or if I'm just being weird)... ▶ I'm trying to buy a gift for someone. ▶ It's a specific event/experience type thing that I'm looking at, that's available in quite a few different places. ▶ I'd like to give some kind of voucher so they can book to go on the 'experience' at a time that works for them. ▶ But every provider I've looked at so far only offers monetary gift vouchers. Am I being odd in really not liking this? Maybe it's easier for the providers, but it really doesn't do it for me! I think it comes down to two things: 1. I really don't want my gift to be seen as a monetary/transactional thing. 2. If I can only buy a monetary voucher, why wouldn't I just give them cash?

This weekend, I witnessed a pitch gone wrong. I was at a local fair with my family, and a scout leader was selling raffle tickets. He kept shouting the same line over and over: “Raffle tickets, 25 kroner, support the scouts, win travel gift cards!” It wasn’t a bad offer. But nobody cared. Why? Because he was talking at people, not to people. That's why he was the only vendor with no customers. Here’s what I would've done differently: 1. Picked a victim from the crowd. 2. Asked them if they needed a holiday. 3. Then slowly segueing into pitching my raffle tickets. I would've mentioned how expensive holidays can be, but that I had these sweet gift cards on offer and that they'd support the local scouts at the same time. So here's how you can apply that to your copy: 1. Focus on one person at a time. 2. Lead with the benefit that’ll grab their attention. 3. Speak like you’re having a conversation, not giving a lecture. That's it for today -- happy Monday, ya'll.

Keynote Speaker - Everything I Need To Know, I Learned From '80s Pop Culture | Author | Film and Stage Consultant
"I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen." Ever given your heart to a company/organization and received a pen in return? When Lloyd says, “I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen,” he is talking to his sister about his last conversation with his crush, Diane Court, before she leaves for England. Sitting in his car with her, Lloyd tells her how he feels. He shows her why he is the one for her. He does everything right. He gives it his all, and she gives him a pen. “Write me,” she says before opening the door and leaving the car. We’ve all been there at some point in our careers. You’ve given the job everything you can, and you’ve succeeded. You’re doing a great job, and people are noticing. You've given it your all. Your entire heart. This is the moment when you just know that a promotion and a raise are inevitable. But it doesn’t happen. Instead you get a "great job", a $10 gift card to Starbucks or an email to the team announcing your "great work and contributions to the team". While you gave your “heart,” they gave you a “pen.” So where do you go from here? Sometimes, what we perceive to be a slight is actually the best that someone can do at that time. There could be very real reasons why your company couldn’t give you the raise or promotion at that time. Ultimately, you may just get that raise and promotion, but not at the same time that you give your “heart.” And if the reality is that the “pen” ends up being nothing more than a pen, it may be time to move on and find a company that embraces their inner Lloyd Dobler - complete with a boombox, Chevy Malibu and a Peter Gabriel serenade. #WorkplaceCulture #EmployeeRetention #CareerDevelopment #takecareofyou #80smovies
