Lockheed Martin's mission initially drew me in after my military retirement, seeking for a similar sense of purpose. Joining as an Information System Security Risk Analyst in 2018, now known as Classified Cybersecurity, fulfilled that longing and continues to do so. What keeps me here is the culture of continuous learning and abundant growth opportunities. In cybersecurity, the ever-changing landscape means constant learning and collaboration across departments, bolstering our data security. Partnering with government entities to shape national security strategies has been particularly rewarding. Working with inspiring leaders, attending cybersecurity conferences, and leading a team of eager individuals have propelled my professional growth. From obtaining my Master’s degree to leading transformative business initiatives, I've been continuously challenged and empowered to evolve. Within just six years at Lockheed Martin, the support from my leaders and team has propelled me from a Junior Analyst to a Classified Cybersecurity Manager. My diverse background in military Information Technology has equipped me to lead effectively and mentor my team through their career journeys. The most rewarding of all my tasks and responsibilities is working with the team to mentor and guide them through their careers. Being that go-to person for them gives me the drive to continue to learn, grow and be there for them. I’ve been challenged each step of the way by my leaders and it has been a rewarding experience to be a part of a team that not only cares about the mission, but you as a person. Curiosity is a form of rebellion, and it’s good for business. In Francesca Gino’s book “Rebel Talent: Why it Pays to Break the Rules at Work and in Life” Francesca examines several case studies and businesses that thrived because they challenged the status quo and weren’t afraid to do things differently. How do you foster curiosity where you work? In the Security Operations Center where I work, we foster an emotionally safe and curious environment by encouraging questions, giving grace to mistakes, and constantly challenging each other to do better. It’s always an exciting experience to onboard a new batch of interns and share our methodologies with them. Every round of interns we get offers a brand new set of opportunities to share what we know, and be challenged to improve by their raw curiosity and constant questions. The information security field will always be in need of rebellion to keep us on our toes and keep us ahead of the bad actors. We've all heard, and maybe recent events have demonstrated, that there's a cybersecurity skill shortage. We see folks coming out of college ready to hit the workforce and go. Yet most companies are only recruiting for positions that require experience, even while they tag them as "entry level" positions. We, as the folks that have been in the trenches, owe it to our new colleagues to take them under our wings and mentor them. Help them find spots. Help them grow. Late on posting this but wanted to thank Alan Clinard CISSP, CRISC, CISA, Theodore Peterson, and Joe Ness for joining us at Fox and the Pantry for coffee last week. We were able to discuss all kinds of security topics and struggles facing security leaders. Key Takeaways: -Cross training is important or at least having some type of shared job knowledge. The consequence of not doing that can leave you with employees that are virtually irreplicable because they are the only people people with the system/company knowledge to accomplish certain tasks. This can make it difficult to give that person a clear career growth plan because they are needed in their current role and also adds a lot of risk if that person decides to leave the position. QUESTION: There is a lot of chatter and conversation around Chat GPT but the tool that is continuously getting a very high grade is Copilot. Have you personally seen the use of Copilot benefit your work or the work of your colleagues? Can't wait to see what interesting topics and discussion come up this week.

Via a mutual friend I met someone new in Berlin today. I love learning about people’s careers and passing on any feedback which might help them in the future. Let’s be honest, most of us don’t like to sell ourselves. In fact, we can often undersell ourselves. If you want to stand out when applying for jobs, you need to think about what difference YOU made, what problems YOU solved and how the next organisation came benefit from YOUR skills and experience. Don’t just focus on the activities you did, relate them to outcomes for the organisation.
