The Texas Education commissioner testified last year that only 19% of instructional materials in public schools are at grade level. That’s dismal. It’s the prime responsibility of the State Board of Education to get curriculum standards and instructional materials right, and when they get them wrong, students suffer. It’s time for the State Board of Education to be held accountable for this and other educational issues in our state. Luckily, no law has to change for this to happen. These changes are already within the purview of the SBOE - we just need vigilant, energetic members to actually implement them. 19% is just one of many unacceptable numbers right now. It’s time for a change. Let’s get the right people involved in the education of our children.
