"The EPA rule relies on installation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) equipment for several categories of power plants, in spite of overwhelming evidence that CCS is expensive, energy intensive, and does not work as advertised. By requiring co-firing with gas for coal-fired plants retiring by 2039, the EPA is ignoring the growing scientific evidence of higher lifecycle emissions for gas than their models account for, because of higher rates of upstream methane leakage than is assumed in the models. For low and intermediate load gas turbine power plants, which include highly polluting peaker plants, the EPA is requiring only incremental improvements in efficiency and the use of lower-emitting fuels. This is not the kind of power plant regulation we need in 2024 to address the growing threat of climate catastrophe, and the ongoing crisis of toxic air in frontline communities.” https://lnkd.in/gpZCmKsj

NEW: “The release of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s final #greenhousegas standards is an important milestone and will strengthen the market signals to decarbonize the US economy," said BCSE President Lisa Jacobson. "Sharp declines in US power sector emissions over the past decade – driven by the BCSE portfolio of #energyefficiency, #naturalgas, and #renewableenergy technologies – have demonstrated that there are many cost-effective solutions readily available to reduce carbon pollution. The BCSE coalition looks forward to reviewing the finalized rule in more detail and working with EPA and states on its implementation." Thought leader, mission-oriented, service-minded - VP Electrification and Member Experience, Beltrami Electric Cooperative
Add costly, myopic and unfortunate to the list of adjectives describing this action. EPA is introducing a high degree of risk into the electric grid to achieve its zero-sum outcomes at the altar of climate change. #energytransition, #nreca, #EPA, #voices4coops
The Environmental Protection Agency released four major new regulations for the electric industry last Thursday, including a much-anticipated rule to cut emissions from power plants, a sweeping move that NRECA CEO Jim Matheson said will aggravate reliability concerns for electric cooperatives and other utilities nationwide. https://bit.ly/4bh9Sxz #ReliablePower
