We relocated to Asheville in 2023 and witnessed some of the devastation firsthand. It's no exaggeration to say that what some people have experienced is beyond catastrophic. The city of Asheville will not have running water for 'several weeks' (the only real estimate we've heard). Cell service and electricity remain spotty. Gas station and grocery store lines can last multiple hours. We were very, very lucky and sustained no house damage from water, wind or trees. When a road out of town finally opened Sunday, we were able to head east to my parents' house. Thousands of others there don't have that option and need every bit of help that they can receive. I haven't been on LinkedIn lately (for obvious reasons), so if these links have been posted a thousand times, feel free to keep scrolling. I never fail to be proud of being a Trustee of the THE RADNORSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST LIMITED We're tiny but mighty. Actually we're tiny but b*llsy too. Important difference. And because Boards hold the purse strings and the Comms and Engagement policies, Board calibre is essential to success. Our Chair Sue Holden leads an exceptionally well run Board - where we efficiently dot i's and cross t's instead of wasting time unpicking poorly made decisions. Speed over haste wins the race every time. We work with anyone who wants to work with us and uphold our values. We don't waste time trying to convert everyone or progress at the pace of the slowest or most recalcitrant. We'll have a coffee with anyone and everyone. But our priorities and our values are our own - they aren't for sale. I know that many Wildlife Trust leadership staff around the country know what needs to be done. And it isn't keeping quiet. More Trust Boards must become expert Trustees and learn how to expertly delegate operational decisions to the expert and experienced staff they hired. We all have our roles to play. We have bags of talent around the UK network, staff and Trustees. But like gifted footballers, can we work together in our separate roles as gifted teams scoring goals for wildlife and standing up against the forces ranged against it? Not easy.

Public engagement discuss…. I’m asking the question here of the engaged professionals on LinkedIn. Having heard from tree officers and arboriculturists about the thousands of enquires that they get from the public wanting trees removed because of perceived threats or experienced nuisance; Having tried to facilitate consultation processes around trees where the parties had no desire to allow space in their own minds to comprehend one another’s drivers, needs or perceptions; Having met with members of the public, protesting about a felled tree who said to me “I want to make the tree consultant feel the pain that I feel”; But also having been involved with and seen brilliantly successful tree schemes that have engaged the public and delivered for everyone; I photographed this tree today with a paradigm in my head of what story it would tell. However, it turns out that it tells a slightly different story than is implied by my preceding list. I want to shout out to Clay Alexander Robison, who passed away at 59 on 7 Jan 1966. He served for many years as the Story County Conservation Board Secretary and was a National Director of the Izaak Walton League of America (national office). Prior to his passing, he donated land to form a wildlife refuge. We need more people like him in our world. Today, I enjoyed hiking on that land. I was inspired to learn that the county is applying innovative conservation efforts such as removing invasive plants like honeysuckle and multi-flora rose and using goats to graze the underbrush in order to restore the area to the native vegetation that likely existed prior to the settlement of the State. Opportunities to provide service and do lasting good for our communities exist all around us. What better way to instill character, values, and principles and build community than to organize and serve on a conservation project? Numerous publications document the decline of social consciousness and the erosion of the core values necessary for better business and effective (good) government. Articles describe increasing social awkwardness and the lack of fundamental leadership. A mechanism to reverse that trend is staring us in the face. 🌲🌳 Last week, Maryland reached a major conservation milestone — after setting its “30 by 30” goal in 2023, the state announced that, as of February 2024, it had reached this goal six years ahead of schedule. This means that the state has already conserved more than 1.85 million acres out of Maryland’s 6.1 million acres of total land area.   State leaders credit partnership as key to this conservation success, including working closely with local governments, nonprofit land trusts, conservation organizations, federal agencies, and landowners.
