Congratulations to Grace Steinwurtzel on being named a Consulting Magazine Rising Star of the Profession in the Excellence in Client Service category! In honor of this award, she provides insight into her career journey and shares why this recognition is a culmination of her team’s hard work. What would you say has been the biggest factor in your success? Grace: The biggest factor has been the support I have received from colleagues. Although most data-centered roles require substantial independent technical problem-solving, collaboration has been key for fostering continued engagement, success and personal growth. Our Data & Analytics team is incredibly supportive, forming a global community where different perspectives and skill sets converge to reach actionable solutions. A large part of my success is directly attributable to what I have learned from my colleagues. What do you enjoy most about the consulting industry? Grace: I value how unique each engagement is and the cross-industry exposure working in consulting provides. Our clients span a wide range of sectors and constantly present us with new problems to solve, each having its own complex technical challenges requiring different advanced analytic techniques and foundational knowledge. It is the diversity of the work that keeps me engaged, excited to continuously learn and motivated to support our clients with innovative solutions. What does this recognition mean to you? Grace: The nomination alone is a huge honor, and I am grateful to be recognized by, and alongside, such accomplished individuals. It is a testament to my leaders and colleagues at FTI Consulting who have provided invaluable mentorship, invested in my professional growth and trusted me with opportunities that pushed me out of my comfort zone. What is your proudest achievement? Grace: I graduated from college with a B.A. in psychology and had limited exposure to the technical skills that are critical for working in this area. Ultimately, growing into a position where my team members would reach out to me for technical assistance and advice was a significant moment for me. Advancing my own technical skills and applying this to my work was always a primary goal of mine, but arriving at the point where I could start transferring knowledge to other team members to facilitate collective success was incredibly gratifying. #ExpertsWithImpact #TeamFTI

When you approach the final and last run of your career years like, you know - the 4th quarter, one begins to think differently about what to do with the final time on the clock. We rarely talk about the R word because who actually retires these days? One thing I know for sure is that every day I'm grateful for lessons learned throughout my career, and it's a very long list of lessons that I keep adding to. Today I'm grateful for learning from the agency side of the business that, if you only give Clients what they ask for, you're probably not going to be in business very long. Thank you to all the creative people particularly at The Martin Agency who instilled that in me and my belief system. Maybe that's why I don't make a good "request-fulfiller," as I do my best to exceed expectations, and to be a good thought partner in helping clients solve their most critical challenges. And I'm also grateful for the first company I ever worked for, a F500 conglomerate. Recently someone told me that I have a management consulting approach in advising clients. Wait, what? Me? The comment made me reflect back on my career as to where that approach may have come in to play. The conglomerate's CEO formerly worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, and we had hired BAH to help us with business growth and extensive M&A expansion leading to record sales/net earnings for 25 years in a row. It's possible that I unknowingly picked it up from those execs that influenced the first 9 years of the 1st quarter of my career. The head of corporate accounting was my favorite as he was the consummate manager. I remember once writing a paper about him. He was young but his joints were riddled with 4th-stage rheumatoid arthritis yet he played squash every day at lunch, and was so intrumental in advancing technology even back then. He made coffee for us every morning, and I tried to beat him to the office to do it for him as he could barely hold on to the thermos. You know, the old stainless and glass green kind. Bottom line, I'm grateful to all those past and present who have helped me succeed in helping others succeed. 🚀 One month at Oliver Wyman: My journey so far As I reflect on my first month at Oliver Wyman I am compelled to share some observations. What follows is purely my personal view. Unveiling Oliver Wyman: During my early interviews in 2023, I heard people say, “Oliver Wyman is not just any consulting firm.” Skepticism crept in. But what I have witnessed so far is a real powerhouse that seamlessly blends industry expertise with strategic finesse. It’s entrepreneurial, with fewer formalities – a very refreshing approach that resonates with me. #SupplyChain and #Procurement specifics: Given my background I was curious about Oliver Wyman’s capabilities in this space. Let me tell you, I am beyond excited. I have seen so many of my colleagues here driving prestigious, top-notch projects, mainly being part of large-scale performance transformations - it is in OWs DNA. And I am right in the middle of it with my mission to further grow the already robust Procurement consulting practice. If you know me, you know that is where my passion lies and what I love to do. My onboarding starts with an #adventure in the great outdoors. Picture this: gathering nettles in the heavily pouring rain to cook pesto for a team that is sitting around the campfire. Later listening to the real crazy in-house OW band rock out until 3 a.m. – that was an extremely cool event! Hats off to Judith Joseph and Franziska Marks for making my onboarding experience seamless. I have met with so many colleagues from diverse industries and functions. The learning curve? Steep, but really rewarding.   My guiding lights: Dr. Michael Lierow, Xavier Nouguès ★ Oliver Wyman, Gilles Roucolle, Dr. Sebastian Janssen, Jens Torchalla, Cornelius Herzog and many more – my mentors and buddies. I am incredibly excited to announce that on Monday I am joining Slalom’s Public and Social Impact (PSI) sector to help lead and grow their US Federal practice. PSI is committed to solving the most critical and high-priority challenges facing our communities across government, education, and nonprofit sectors and I look forward to helping drive growth and impact for our Federal clients. Slalom’s rich company culture (consistently ranked as a top employer by GPTW, Forbes, Consulting Magazine, among others) and core values strongly resonated with me (especially, “drive connection and teamwork,” “fuel growth and innovation,” and “build and shape a better future”). I am inspired by the team I have met so far and I know we will create a successful, lasting, and impactful US Federal business. This announcement is bittersweet, as this marks my last week with Guidehouse, a company that I have been with for almost nine years—before its inception from PwC. I consider myself exceptionally fortunate to have joined such an incredible company and team that I have learned so much from. My journey started when Carrie Kurtz Turner, who leads an incredible boutique recruiting firm, reached out to me about an opportunity to help launch PwC’s Public Sector Analytics team. When I joined PwC in September 2015, I never could have imagined the success and growth our team and firm would have. Bob Dunmyer and I started on the same day, as employees six and seven on PwC’s Public Sector Analytics team. Together, we built one of the best and largest public sector analytics practices, growing our team to over 350 people. We had many highs and lows throughout our journey together. The lowest point being when our leader, and my mentor, Bill Stephens passed away unexpectedly. I owe so much of my success to Bill and words cannot describe the impact that his loss had on our team, Bob, and me. I know Bill would be so proud of everything our team and I have accomplished and I am forever grateful of the leadership and friendship that Bob provided during that difficult time. Whenever I am asked about what I like most about Guidehouse, I always answer “the people.” During my time at Guidehouse, I have been surrounded by hardworking, intelligent, capable, and fun people. I’d like to call out a few people in the comments (I ran out of space on this post!) that have had the biggest influence on my time at Guidehouse. I am lucky to have worked with so many incredible people during my time at Guidehouse and I wish I could thank each and every one of you individually. 

2023! What a year of abundant growth and opportunities! From starting off with the steadfast support of loved ones, to ending the year on a high note in many ways.
