Data saves lives! We need to introduce an ICD-9 code for harm due to inadequate or poor use of health data…perhaps this way people will recognise why health data standards are so important. This was one of the many insightful messages from David O’Toole as he shared his experience and wisdom in his time as CEO of the Canadian Institute for Health Information recently. I reflected on this statement over the weekend as I struggled to share my health data across care providers to support the decision making of a specialist. My intention was to avoid multiple blood tests by sharing one set of results across two different healthcare clinics. After 3 weeks, partial shares and multiple phone calls and faxes (being told fax was the safest way to share health data!), I finally achieved the outcome I was seeking - for the purpose of reducing healthcare inefficiencies and enabling better healthcare decision making. In the words of David O’Toole, ‘let’s not be timid, let’s all get our own house in order in terms of internal data governance and get a move on!’ Roger Tam Rishma Abdulhusein Justin D.
