The recent AU$21 million donation to The Nature Conservancy to help fund the Queensland Government's purchase of Vergemont Station to create a new 300,000 hectare national park, is almost certainly the single largest philanthropic contribution to land protection in Australia. However, it was by no means the first and follows other significant donations in Australia from the likes of the Wyss Foundation, the Holdfast Collective (Patagonia’s non-profit shareholder), and Haley Mellin’s Art into Acres initiative through Re:wild to help state governments purchase land and establish new national parks and contribute to #30x30 outcomes. In this article in The Mandarin, I outline that in each case, government financial commitments, through dedicated conservation land purchase funds, have created the right conditions for philanthropy to partner and get bigger outcomes. Science and policy experts suggest a dedicated $5 billion land acquisition fund is required at the national level (https://lnkd.in/gUWeWmcf) to complement other protected area approaches on Indigenous and private lands. In the absence of dedicated land purchase funds, the Australian government is missing a significant opportunity to bring new philanthropic money to the table to help it meet its 30x30 target.

We've seen plenty of discussion about this article. Though National Parks Authorities are not charities themselves, all boards – regardless of legal setup – benefit from a diversity of skills, knowledge and experience, and inclusive practice. In addition, National Park Authorities work closely with many charities. A lack of #diversity on a #NationalPark board may have knock-on impacts on charities in partnership. Ancestral Stewardship Payments + Structures to support indigenous led biocultural preservation Our planet faces an unprecedented environmental crisis, yet we continue to undervalue one of our most potent resources: indigenous-led conservation. After a decade of supporting indigenous-led conservation efforts, I've witnessed firsthand how traditional stewards of the land are already safeguarding 80% of Earth's biodiversity. Many indigenous communities possess not just deep ecological knowledge, but the profound capacity to see beyond conventional timelines and the noise of the mind, offering proven conservation methods that have preserved our planet's most vital ecosystems for generations. However, indigenous communities face mounting challenges. New anti-terrorism laws taking effect in 2025 will create additional barriers for nonprofits working with indigenous communities, threatening our nonprofit status and potentially reducing funding by 20% or more. These changes increase administrative costs that divert precious resources from direct project support to indigenous-led biocultural preservation. Ancestral Heart understands the urgency of our environmental crisis and the untapped potential of indigenous leadership to address it. We envision a paradigm shift: an indigenous-led system where technology serves as a bridge rather than a barrier. Our vision encompasses over 50 biocultural regions, each with an original house of thought anchoring the spiritual into the physical world. Through our Ancestral Stewardship Payments system - a biocultural credit and certification system - we can create sustainable resource flows to vital projects, moving beyond current limitations that delay critical support, like when it took several months for us to raise $50,000 for First Man's Rastafarian village after hurricane damage. We've already demonstrated success: recent events at Necker Island and Atlantic Crossing generated $200,000 for indigenous-led biocultural work. This shows how $5,000 can grow to $100,000. Now we aim higher: $50,000,000 activated for biocultural work in 2025. We have a dozen sites that can be activated right away. With AI's growing demand for resources like lithium and quartz, we must act swiftly. This Giving Tuesday, we're seeking $25,000-$100,000 to launch this vision. Funding from our Bluespaces programme is helping to create new and improved habitats across Sunderland’s coalfield area. A £20,000 donation from our team delivering a £1m project to deliver upgrades at Lumley Water Treatment Works (WTW) is supporting Durham Wildlife Trust’s Links With Nature programme, which is working across 13 sites in partnership with Sunderland City Council. One of those sites is Elemore Park on the former Elemore Colliery site near Easington Lane, which has since been used as a golf course before being turned into Sunderland City Council’s newest park. Volunteers from Durham Wildlife Trust and Wear Rivers Trust have been working to shape the landscape to enhance biodiversity and to engage with local communities, as part of the The National Lottery Heritage Fund-backed programme. Bluespaces allows us to go above and beyond regulatory requirements to help improve accessible spaces around water. Our investment at the WTW will help to protect and improve the resilience and quality of customers’ water supplies and work is due to be completed in April 2025.

We have drawn up plans with Worthing’s community of independent commercial fishermen to transform the town’s unutilised rotunda into a new facility where they can prepare and sell their fresh fish. 🐟 Since the rotunda at Windsor Lawns was boarded up in 2021 following a spate of antisocial behaviour, we have been in talks with Worthing Fishermen’s Society to create a dedicated facility for its members. After years of planning, the project can be brought to life after securing external funding from the Marine Management Organisation, a public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which is creating a prosperous future for seas, coasts and communities. Thanks to additional funding from our Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Neighbourhood Fund, Sussex Bay® and the marine conservation charity Sea-Changers, the facility can now be repurposed to host a cold storage facility, community notice board, ice making machine and sales area. The plan, which was approved by Worthing’s planning committee in October, will present an opportunity to revive the town’s once-thriving fishing scene. Today, there are only a select group of fishermen on its shingle shore keeping the culture and businesses alive in the town. Work on transforming the rotunda is getting underway from Monday 20th January, with the facility due to be complete in Spring 2025.

It's great to look back on the accomplishments of the 23/24 financial year which saw 3 #SANG transfer to The Land Trust in 3 different counties, bringing the Trust’s SANG portfolio to 14, spanning nearly 400 hectares. The pipeline for new SANG is growing every month and subject to the usual caveats, we expect to acquire over 100 hectares by March 2026. With the introduction of mandatory #BNG and the nascent offsite BU market, most new SANG on LT's pipeline have stacked BNG with a view of selling the BU alongside the SANG capacity. It's made for some interesting debate and adds a new layer of complexity to the legal negotiation, but overall it's positive to quantify and deliver multiple benefits from green infrastructure in perpetuity. There's a lot of discussion around the nascent BU market and supply and demand at the moment. One anecdotal observation from me is that it is reasonable to assume that the BU market will be more buoyant in LPAs where SANG are required. This could impact pricing of BU in these areas due to greater supply and 'SANG BU' potentially able to be sold for less than 'Habitat Bank BU'.
