In August, 20 youth, 25 educators and organizers, and a crew of 15 embarked on an inspiring journey aboard the icebreaker Polar Prince, sailing from Iqaluit, Nunavut to St. Johns, NL. Robert Briggs, research officer from our Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Centre, was an educator on the SOI Foundation Blue Futures Pathway expedition that brought young people together with Indigenous knowledge holders, scientists, industry professionals and artists to explore career pathways in the Sustainable Blue Economy. Participants gained hands-on skills and knowledge in science and climate change, and learned how Indigenous knowledge systems and Western science can harmonize to address pressing global challenges. The journey fostered environmental stewardship and a deeper understanding of Canada’s international role in sustainable ocean development. How much does it cost to have a team of scientists collect and analyze data and write reports on your behalf? Millions! Only the big guys — billion dollar companies, some governments of developed countries, and some large NGOs— can afford it. They get the ‘science’ that benefits them, while all the smaller businesses, teams, communities, NGOs, countries, municipalities, etc. are stuck at the mercy of outsiders and the decisions they make. For example, I met three NGOs and one government (in Nova Scotia!) this week that collect data, but they don’t have the in-house capacity to analyze the data to protect the communities they serve. They *hope* that one day some scientists will do the analysis for them. At eOceans, we believe that every community, organization, team, business, etc. should have equal access to a million dollar team of scientists, and that they should be able to unite within and across interests to scale their power and protect their interests. I’m giving a special talk at this years SXSW Sydney, Australia! SXSW aka South By South West, is happening this October. In just a few weeks, I’ll be presenting a very special, reflective and forward thinking presentation. I’ve never given this before. I have so many bright ideas to share and enjoy with the SXSW audience. Surprise, surprise, the theme is focused around marine giants like whales. But wait! There’s so much more! I’ll be taking a deep dive on how we research these ocean creatures and how their lives cross over with ours. Importantly, I reflect on the cultural aspect of whales and how learning from Indigenous knowledge holders opens up a whole new lens for research. One that is collaborative, respectful and seeks out recognition for those who came before us. Of course there will be my usual whale sound production, talk of whale snot and poo- ya gotta have this in there. Plus, ideas around how we go about conserving and connecting in a changing world. This is powerful. Nothing is standing still, we are in motion and so is climate change and the way we and whales, interact with the world around us. The third cohort of our Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program, held this October, was another resounding success, bringing us to 28 total countries and territories that have matriculated and demonstrating to the world that we can shift away from fossil fuels, even if global superpowers are going to move away from sustainable initiatives. The #OceanDecade can deliver the science we need for the ocean we want! 📢 On 10-12 April, the global ocean community is meeting at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, at Barcelona, Spain. Regarding this international conference, IHCantabria confirms its commitment to research, technology transfer and education & capacity building aimed at maintaining healthy oceans, to reduce the marine pollution and to raise awareness about the need to protect the oceans.   🔴 Researchers from the Oceanography, Estuaries and Water Quality Group of IHCantabria are developing several projects related to marine litter, water quality, accidental pollution and protection of the oceans, such as the following projects that are part of the Marine Science Program (PCM) of this institute: ARES, MARION and GLOS GLOBAL; as well as the European Prompt project, which is implemented with the support of the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). ▶ Ana J. The Future of Arctic Research is Bright The Arctic is a rapidly changing region, and it is essential that we have a strong understanding of the impacts of climate change on this unique ecosystem. Indigenous Peoples and Arctic communities have a deep knowledge of the Arctic, and their insights are essential for informing research and policy. Here is a prediction: I believe that going forward, we will see more research led by Indigenous Peoples and Arctic communities. This is a shift from Indigenous Peoples as the subjects of research to us choosing how to participate. That might be in leadership roles or identifying the research questions, or all kinds of other levels of involvement throughout the research process. This is a positive change, and it is one that I am excited to see. When Indigenous Peoples are involved in research, it is more likely to be relevant to our needs and priorities. It is also more likely to be conducted in a way that is respectful of our cultures and values. I am hopeful for the future of Arctic research. Today is the last day to apply for Cohort 6 of the Climatebase Fellowship! As a Cohort 5 fellow, I can say that this was, and continues to be, a worthwhile experience! I originally applied for the fellowship in order to become more educated on the different climate industry sectors and to acquire tips on how to get a climate job. Climatebase offered this and so much more! Here are some highlights: - Connecting with outstanding career coach Magda Kufrej (she/her), whose mission is to help people find work that brings them joy. - Leading a zero waste capstone project with a fabulous group of fellows: Alexis Miller, MS, Jacqueline Kuo and Debra Flieder. We have learned a lot together! Stay tuned on upcoming posts where we share findings from a survey we distributed about existing reuse/resale online platforms! - Participating in fellowship groups such as the Circular Economy Knowledge Sharing & Support and Finance & Investing groups. - Getting connected with a climate tech group local to my area (Baltimore Climate Tech Meetup) that I didn't know existed before joining Climatebase. It feels great to be connected with so many like-minded souls!

Across our college, which spans five departments, there are tremendous research breakthroughs. We have experts creating new materials, preparing for a green energy future, and improving how we adapt to climate change and weather risk, to name a few. But geoscientist Jesse Reimink's approach to a new theory for how the Earth's continental crusts formed earned our Robertson Research Breakthrough of the Year. The Earth's tectonic plates are critical to understanding the uniqueness of our planet: How it formed, how live was created and sustains, and how other planets follow a similar path.
