Seven Greenways: A Cooperative Vision for Water in the Arid West | Design Workshop https://lnkd.in/ghdUqnQz Design Workshop facilitated coalition workshops to gain consensus on objectives and aspirations. Case study examination of successes and confronting failures was a useful framework for identifying pervasive topics. The group discovered large-scale reciprocal efforts that would have the most sustainable success. This was formulated into a 100-year vision for big change to be possible through smaller actions. Before this project, individual cities competed for small local grants, causing a sense of scarcity. This has changed with the plan’s compelling cross-government projects applicability for exponentially greater funding. 🌿 Nature is a key stakeholder in the development of #infrastructure and #realestate. Big corporations are already integrating nature into their business decisions, but for small and medium enterprises #SMEs, it can be a challenge to navigate all the new regulations and requirements.🌱 The good news is that help is at hand! Over the last few months, myself and a handful of expert colleagues from peer consultancies have been working with the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) to produce the #NatureGuide: it supports non-nature professionals to make informed decisions regarding #natureanddevelopment.🌳 Learning the new #policy landscape can be daunting, but with this guide to hand, avenues to embed nature and biodiversity roll clearly into view. 🍃 Nature must be seen as the enabler and opportunity partner for project success. A scheme can really benefit from nature and biodiversity – better health of users and better resilience to climate impacts, to name just a couple.🌼 The way we build has changed, and nature is at the table with the planning and design team now. Whether you’re a nature professional or not, nature is a voice you can’t ignore any more. #nature #biodiversity #realestate #development #sustainability AECOM - Environmental Services #SustainableLegacies #ForNature Thank you, Team! The planning process for zero and low-carbon technologies is set to be simplified in Scotland. Revised permitted development rights have been tabled and subject to parliamentary scrutiny they are expected to come into effect from 24 May. Changes include making it easier for property owners in conservation areas to alter or replace their windows to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Those households will also be able to install solar panels in certain circumstances. Limits on the power output of panels on non-domestic buildings will be removed, allowing businesses to install more without planning permission. The changes will bring Scotland largely in line with England where similar changes were made last November.

An overview of the findings of green roof mapping in Vancouver, BC. As noted in the article, GRIN was established when BCIT's roof programming ended. Almost 20 years ago (!) we worked with the Capital Regional District and Next Level Stormwater Management to install, in part, intensive and extensive green roofs covering 670m2 at their Victoria headquarters. The largest extensive roof was monitored by BCIT for two years (it was the first pilot test centre on Vancouver Island) and researchers found that the green roof retained 36% of rainfall with peak runoff flow reduced by over 90% and delayed by nearly 2 hours. My guess is that we, like Vancouver, do not have enough green roofs for benefits beyond building scale. It would be very interesting to see a retrofit analysis done for Greater Victoria and explore how increased green roof incentivization across municipalities could work in tandem with, for example, existing urban canopy initiatives for a region-wide approach to urban heat and stormwater management. City of Victoria Councilors did vote at the beginning of 2024 to explore reducing barriers to building green roofs so there is already some momentum. https://lnkd.in/g_qQsVGe
this is a follow up to a comment I made the other day about the sophisticated mapping we have been up to in Vancouver and why we need it to support policy action that ensures, with no excuses, integrated blue/green infrastructure and nature positive actions for every new and every renovation project.
