Manager, Global Scientific and Regulatory Documentation, Bristol Myers Squibb | AI Enthusiast | PhD to Industry Transition Guidance | B1-German Certified
I receive multiple messages on LinkedIn requesting guidance for breaking into regulatory medical writing. Many of these aspiring medical writers have impressive qualifications and professional experience. Not too long ago, securing an entry-level medical writer job with no prior professional experience was not uncommon. Now, I see many PhDs, PharmDs, and MDs with substantial work experience, struggling to pivot to medical writing. I hope hiring teams recognize that career pivots in your 30s or beyond are not undertaken on a whim. Such decisions demand significant self-awareness and risk appetite. When a candidate finds the courage to embark on a new career path, they bring with them unwavering dedication and a learning mindset to establish themselves in their chosen field. Do not overlook such candidates. The chances of them pleasantly surprising you are remarkably high. #MedicalWriting #CareerPivots #Career

Day 4 of my series where I talk about common mistakes aspiring medical writers make when applying to roles. It's important to mentally make the identity shift to *medical writer* before you start applying to roles. For example, if you previously worked as a pharmacist, avoid applying as a pharmacist looking to transition into medical writing. Instead, apply as a medical writer with a background in pharmacy work. When you identify yourself as a medical writer or a medical communicator and refer to yourself this way in your applications, you'll avoid potential confusion and instantly communicate your fit for the role to HR and hiring managers. #medicalwriting #scientificwriting #medcomms #freelancewriter #jobhunt #phdlife #phd #phdcareers

Medical writer since 2006: reliable, efficient, meticulous I Creator of the online Agency Ready training and coaching programme for medical writers
Let's talk job titles. Not all people who do medical writing appear to have the job title of Medical Writer. Some of them do part of what medical writers do, and some support medical writers. Job titles appear to be becoming more specialised, and I'm all for it. But, each agency has their own terminology and it's increasingly difficult to know what's what. I've seen Editorial Assistants, Content Verification Specialists, Scientific Specialists, Data Visualisation Specialists, and others. Today's question for you: What positions are you aware of that are similar to the medical writer role, or that works to support/collaborate with medical writers?

Are you aware of the critical role that a medical writer plays in clinical research? These experts are often overlooked, yet they serve as the critical bridge between complex scientific information and a variety of audiences. Medical writers have a diverse workload, ranging from developing documents related to therapy development and reporting to communicating research findings to the scientific community, patients, regulatory authorities, and the general public. Their work is not only about writing; it involves a broad knowledge about medicine, statistics, and regulatory affairs. Good medical writing requires a unique blend of scientific understanding, creative writing, and excellent communication skills. Most medical writers come from life science backgrounds, such as medicine, biology, or pharmacy. They are adept at interpreting complex clinical and scientific data and are conversant with medical terminology and regulatory environments. With the increasing global demand for therapy development, the need for talented medical writers is on the rise. If you have a passion for science and a feeling for writing, this could be the career for you. Happy weekend, beautiful people! I'm thrilled to share my excitement with you all. As someone who's always been fascinated by healthcare and the therapeutic environment, I've discovered a new passion that brings me immense satisfaction - writing! Specifically, medical writing. I'm drawn to medical writing because I believe it has the power to make a real difference in people's lives. By conducting health-related research and putting findings into words, I hope to contribute to improving the management of chronic illnesses and empowering individuals to take control of their health. No one should have to navigate the complexities of healthcare in the dark. Additionally, I'm eager to collaborate with pharmaceutical companies, helping them share their innovative products and equipment with the world through compelling writing. I've taken the first step by registering for a medical writing course, and I'm eager to learn and grow. I welcome corrections, critiques, and guidance from experienced professionals in the field. Meet me, Blessing Ebong, RN, aspiring Medical Writer! #MedicalWriter #HealthcareCommunications #PassionMeetsPurpose

💡 Help projects move faster with this one neat trick: set clear boundaries. ✍🏻 Especially as a new medical writer, it can be tempting to say "yes" to whatever the client asks. 👤Clients can be fickle and change their minds about a project. 📈Loose boundaries make a project more expensive for the client and less fulfilling for the writer: scope creep and changing goals can slow progress and make a lot of wasted effort. 👥Boundaries guide future interactions: I had one mentor who explained “each interaction you have with somebody also trains the other person.” This applies to family, friends, colleagues, teams, and clients. If you go beyond your desired boundaries—going along with unreasonably fast turnarounds or responding to emails on your "off hours," for example—that expectation gets reinforced. Then you seem like a jerk when you want to enforce a reasonable boundary that you didn't enforce before. It would be easier for everyone to set that from the get-go. ❓How do you set boundaries in your professional life, and what advice would you give? #MedicalWriting #FreelanceLIfe #Tips +++ 👋 I’m Chris, a medical strategist, writer, and founder of Quill Science LLC.
