How many engineers do you need for your FPGA project (on average)? One of the most demanding difficulties today is controlling costs and engineering people. In the case of FPGA design and verification needs, the output should be increased year by year. An FPGA or field programmable gate array is a special type of integrated circuit that can be programmed after it has been manufactured. This means that you can essentially design and build your own custom hardware using an FPGA without having to go through the expensive and time consuming process of traditional ASIC or application specific integrated circuit. FPGA are made up of configurable logic blocks can be programmed to perform wide variety of function including simple logic gates, complex mathematical operations or even entire processing system. VERILOG and VHDL are widely used hardware description languages to program FPGA to design and build custom hardware and in order to test your design you have to write a program to test your design called testbench for it SystemVERILOG is widely used language in the industry. FPGA provides flexibility, performance and cost effectiveness. Applications in the industry including but not limited to telecommunication, networking, automotive, Aerospace, medical imaging, military. What’s your view on giving major complex ASIC design task to a very senior verification engineer? In my view, verification engineers are great architects, in addition to being verifiers of complex design. But designing complex area and timing efficient logic is a different beast compared to writing (behavioral) verification logic. I recently came across a project, where a very senior verification engineer is given responsibility of major IP design. And guess what, most of the logic is “not” area efficient. Complex arithmetic operators, which should be shared, are not shared and code simply looks like a test bench….. Would love to hear thoughts from experienced ASIC professionals.

In your view, what factors are contributing to the scarcity of FPGA engineers? FPGA engineers require a specialised skill, combining hardware, digital logic, and programming languages like Verilog or VHDL, which can be discouragingly complex and challenging to learn. Many engineering degrees may not even offer extensive coursework specifically focused on FPGA design.  FPGAs are also significantly more expensive than microcontrollers. ASICs are expensive to produce in small quantities but are also more cost-effective than FPGAs when it comes to mass production.
