With many Operators looking to significantly increase the length of their laterals, possibly for the first time, it is probably a good time to revisit what the planning for some of these wells would look like. In this week's Training Module, we'll take a look at what it might take to float 5.5" liner out past 33,000'. Hopefully it is helpful - something to consider anyway... One of the biggest decisions you'll probably make when deciding how to run pipe in long tangent sections is whether or not you have to float it. In this week's Training Module, we'll look at a well that just might run conventionally; or it might not... Take a look and see how YOU would approach this problem on your upcoming wells. To wrap up our discussion about shallow, narrow pressure margin ERD wells, let's take a look at one possible liner-running scenario, and see if a design change in the 8.5" section would help with getting pipe down successfully. In this Training Module, let's look at the effect Surge Pressure and ECD has on running a liner; not on the formation, but on the hookload itself. Most members of the drill team can picture how running very tight-clearance pipe into the hole can cause high surge/circulating pressures; what is less understood is how the equal and opposite force can "push back" on the drillstring. This "hold-up force" can be substantial. Give it some thought; it may be crucial to the success of your next project. In this training module, let's take a fresh look at the effect a more tortuous Wellpath can have on T&D and why it could become important from both a cost and an operational standpoint. In Part II of the Surge/ECD Effect on Hookload series, we'll look at the use of a fluid bypass tool and how it they can increase running speed while reducing surge on the formation. We've been talking about Managed Pressure Drilling in the last few modules, but that leaves the question, "How do I get pipe down? What might that scenario look like?" So, this week we'll take a look at Managed Pressure Casing operations using the same well we've been discussing and compare it with a Conventional run. We'll also take a brief look at an example Floated Managed Pressure Casing run. Will it match YOUR well? Probably not (unless you're drilling in the area this well is based on...), but hopefully it gives you ideas for some of the more difficult wells on your schedule. Give it some thought. Last week, we spent some time discussing how MW affects ROP, with the consensus being that it has a negative effect. How much of a negative effect, however, varied greatly, with a 1 ppg change yielding decreases in the 300% - 500% range in some studies, with others seeing a small to ~30% decrease. This week, we'll look at an actual well, monitored on-site by HXR ERD Specialists, that had two MW increases in the same section, the first .5 ppg, the second .6 ppg, and see if MW was the overriding factor, or if some other things may have been going on. As you can probably tell, we have a few upcoming wells that may require some interesting casing designs, so it has been a good opportunity discuss the effect Tight-Clearance Liners will have on Surge, ECD, Hookload, and Running Speed, etc. In this Module, Part III of the series, we'll take a brief look at how the size of the "Slimhole" liner will affect the NEXT hole section. Anyone who has run many of these will know right from the start that one of these two designs isn't going to work - let's see just how bad it will be...
