The Akelius team in New York organized a partnership with the Salvation Army in Harlem. The partnership consists of three pillars - a coat drive - soup kitchen volunteering - a program which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas For the coat drive, the team collected coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and shoes, to help keep families warm this winter. For the soup kitchen, thirty employees volunteered in the soup kitchen of the Salvation in Harlem. Over three days, the team helped prepare and served meals to 836 people in need. "Working in the soup kitchen was a rewarding and purposeful experience for the employees involved. I echo what Stephen has said. Our volunteering day at St Luke's Charity Shop in Crookes, Sheffield was indeed "hard work, but fun." Spending the whole day on our feet was quite tiring for those of us who usually sit at a desk... More importantly, it was a real eye opener too, highlighting the following points: 1). How much effort goes into running a Charity Shop, particularly behind the scenes. 2). How much money is needed by St Luke's each year in order to keep doing their fantastic work. Total required this year is £14 Million. NHS funds 25% so that leaves c.£10.5 Million to be raised through donations, legacies, retail shops and other activities. Many thousands of Sheffield folks will have their lives touched in some way by St Luke's. Thank you team Assura plc for helping us add that magical touch to our bundles to show the families that people care. I often think of the smiles that these bags generate, the childs smile opening the bags to lots of gorgeous items picked especially for them, and the added hair accessories, toys, toiletries. ‘Mummy aren’t we so lucky!’ Was the response of one 6 yr old girl on receipt of her items, ecstatic about her new toothbrush with her favourite Trolls cartoon character on it. She made it her mission to check out what was in her older brothers bag too to make sure he felt equally as special. I think of the relief their mum must feel, just hours earlier worried about how she was going to keep her children warm this winter, to receiving these items knowing they are now sorted, and have an invite to access further support as her children grow. Our community make providing this vital safety net a breeze. However funding our work is very challenging at the moment and it’s a very worrying time for our small charity as we are trying to secure ongoing operational space after our premises in Stretford gets demolished in 2025. Community perceptions of charities and community groups are shifting. That will require a reset in some of our thinking to find a new North. Community Council for Australia CEO David Crosbie delves into an absolute must read for #charities and #communitygroups: The Community Compass. In this article for the Community Advocate he discusses four of the many issues that arose for him when reviewing the findings: indifference; volunteering; our shifting values; and community views on purpose. Successful retention of volunteers surely has similar values and practices for charities to consider when retaining donors, funders, members, and staff? So with that mind in this NEW Community Life Survey 2023/24 reveals that formal volunteering declined from 27% in 2013/14 to 16%!! What are the causes of that then? I am not sure the reasons given for not volunteering (work, other activities, and children) reveal the underlying issues of that decline🤔 #Charity #Volunteering
