Chemical giant LyondellBassell is set to close its Houston refinery and exit the refining industry this coming weekend, according to a new report. The company's refinery, located on the Houston Ship Channel, is planning to lay off up to 400 employees. The layoffs are expected to begin about two months after the shutdown begins, sources told Reuters. The shutdown is expected to be complete by mid to late February. "LyondellBasell is on schedule to cease refining operations at the Houston Refinery at the end of the first quarter of 2025," a Lyondell Spokesperson told Chron. "As previously mentioned, the gradually planned ramp-down begins toward the end of January and continues through February. Our focus is on safely ceasing refining operations to protect the community, environment and our workers." Read more from Janet Miranda: https://lnkd.in/g7u7UFtv

LyondellBasell has announced it will begin the closure of its Houston-area oil refinery at the end of January, with the shutdown expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter. The closure was originally planned for 2023 but was delayed to allow for a transition toward a more sustainable business model. The refinery, which has been operational since 1918, is located along the Houston Ship Channel and is one of the oldest in the region. It covers 700 acres and employs around 1,200 workers and contractors. The facility primarily produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and lube oils. By 2018, the refinery had contributed $811 million to the local economy.

Last month we asked the question that if BHP was not interested in partnering with the Chilean government to build a smelter in-country, then who else would be? Well, as it turns out, plenty of others!! ENAMI Empresa Nacional de Minería's new CEO, #IvanMlynarz, has revealed that the state-owned company has signed 16 MOUs with interested parties keen to explore the possibility of building a new, expanded smelter on the site of the company's 80 Kt/a Hernan Videla Lira (#Paipote) facility in Chile's Region III (#Atacama). As we highlighted in our recent feature article, Copper smelting's new paradigm (https://lnkd.in/gQYnRFM3), there are good reasons to bring capacity back onshore. However, while encouraging, history is littered with non-binding MOUs that have come to nothing and there would seem to be several reasons why it might be difficult to finance the project, not least of which is the subdued outlook for TC/RCs in the next few years. In the meantime Chilean anode production looks set to struggle, especially this month where our #SAVANT production series in real-time is so far showing a 9% fall m/m and an 8% drop y/y. #CopperProduction #CopperSupply #ChileanSmelters Want to know more about how #SAVANT can help you keep on top of the #GlobalCopperMarket?
