As I submit our COP (Communication on Progress) UN Global Compact Network UK questionnaire this week, I find myself reflecting on the strides we’ve made and the journey still ahead of us. Participating in the UN Global Compact has been a significant step for Elevate Global aligning our strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. While I’m incredibly proud of our progress, this moment of reflection provides valuable insight into the areas where we can still improve. Here’s what we’re focusing on: 🔍 Identifying Gaps: The questionnaire highlights both our achievements and the gaps in our current practices. By acknowledging these areas, we can create targeted strategies for improvement. 🌱 Sustainable Practices: Working with The Bulb we are committed to further embedding sustainability into every facet of our operations. From reducing our carbon footprint to enhancing our supply chain transparency, there’s much more we can do. We're looking forward to reviewing our reduction roadmap for the years ahead as we begin our journey. 👥 Strengthening Human Rights and Labour Practices: Ensuring fair and safe working conditions for all employees, both within our company and in our supply chain, remains a priority. We are exploring new ways to promote inclusivity and diversity at every level. 🌐 Community Engagement: Engaging with our community and stakeholders provides us with diverse perspectives and invaluable feedback. We aim to enhance our community outreach and listen more closely to the voices of those we serve. This submission is more than a compliance exercise; it’s an opportunity for growth and continuous improvement. We recognise that we still have a lot to achieve, but by regularly checking in and reflecting on our progress, we can keep moving forward with purpose and determination. A company built on social responsibility 💚 The founders of Ramboll agreed from the very beginning that the value creation of the company was not to focus primarily on profit, growth, or international recognition. Their intention was rather to turn this traditional business model upside-down and begin with the people: to evaluate the company’s success in terms of the happiness of the employees and the positive impacts their work had on society and the people living in it. Børge Rambøll thought that a company’s culture – the glue that binds the employees together – is something that is created when employees and management alike are having casual discussions and influencing each other across the lunch table. Culture is not something that exits on a piece of paper that lists a predefined set of values – it is a lived experience. But in 1986, the number of employees had exceeded 500 and this called for a change in management strategy as there was no table fit for this number of people. Despite his belief that the company culture was best sustained through casual dialogue, Børge Rambøll saw no better solution than to put the philosophy and visions into writing – after all a written introduction was better than no introduction at all. Børge Rambøll described the key point of the philosophy in the following words: “The essence is that you have to behave properly and decently as a person and treat all others as you wish them to treat yourself. This relates to individual customers, colleagues, and society as a whole. Being decent and proper does not only concern whether your tie is in place when doing business. It is about treating other people and society right in a long-time perspective”.
