🌍 If I was starting an offshore engineering team in 2024, this is how I would pick my location: 1. Make sure that there is a ton of senior talent with relevant experience. Companies often prioritize cities close to college campuses with good engineering programs. In my opinion, this is doing it backwards. Regardless of the location, the scarce resource is always going to be senior talent, not junior engineers looking for their first gig. 2. Prioritize time zone synchronicity. Too much weight is placed on cost, when most offshore regions already have excellent economics. Synchronizing time zones will ensure you can work on major projects that require real-time collaboration (and you will save money long term because you're more productive). 3. Research the legal environment thoroughly. Many countries seem to do their best to prevent economic development with arcane corporate and labor laws that make it very difficult to hire and operate. No place is perfect, it's just important that you understand the legal framework before making a move. 4. Pick a city that is easy for executives to visit. This is another way to ensure that your teams work on important projects, because there is lots of potential for in-person collaboration. Short, non-stop flights are best. Bonus points if the city has a thriving culture and awesome restaurants! 5. Find cities that have large national headquarters for comparable businesses. When choosing a destination, many companies think about engineering talent without recognizing that industry context matters. If there are lots of similar businesses in the city, you will find talent that has the technical and industry experience to contribute quickly. 6. Make sure that quality of life is dialed. Safe, walkable cities are not just important for visiting executives and expatriates. If the place you choose has a high quality of life, local employees will stick around, start families, and build a life. 7. Choose satellite cities that are nearby and have similar characteristics. If you succeed, you will eventually expand operations, and you'll be able to expand nationally within roughly the same legal framework. The above reasons are part of why we've helped clients start teams in Mexico City. If you're looking to build or expand your engineering footprint internationally, I'm always happy to share experiences from the last 25 years. photo: Anastasia Blackman

Teamwork: Why We Never Work Alone in High-Risk Industries? 🤝 While solo work is allowed in our industry, a technician working alone faces limitations. Among many other reasons, in critical situations, relying on timely responses from colleagues or rescue services becomes crucial. That's why organizations are adopting the practice of working in pairs or teams 🏋️♀️🏋️♂️ Working in pairs or teams in the wind energy sector fosters trust and mutual reliance. Collaborative efforts redefine teamwork under pressure, gap between different levels of competences, ensuring safety and operational success. 🚀 What's your experience with teamwork in high-risk environments? Making the World Safer and More Efficient | President @ The Callen Group | Author - Speaker - Facilitator - Father
Working with Multi-Cultural Crews One of the processes that we have had great success with is something we call the “Thirty-Word Challenge.” We start at thirty words. We take the expats, normally Supervisors, and challenge them to come up with a list of the thirty words that they believe their crew absolutely need to know. While they’re working on this list, we go to the National crews and ask them to come up with thirty words in their language that they absolutely want their leaders to know. Would it surprise you that these two lists are rarely the same? The lists from the ex-pats are generally focused on technical words, such as “blocks,” “slips,” “wrench.” The lists from multinational/multilingual workers tend to focus on relational and feeling words or phrases, such as “please,” “thank-you,” “Can you help me?” But the best part of this exercise is putting the two groups together and letting them compare their lists. …Getting people to “communicate” is integral to safe and efficient operations. But communication is not always enabled by the same language and is not disabled by having multiple languages on a rig.” This is an excerpt from my book 'Commit to Safe and Efficient Operations' you can get a copy here: https://bit.ly/3sQ45xM #SafeandEfficient #multicultural #offshore #drilling #highrisk

💬 Great conversation today with a very experienced contractor: How Do You Ensure Professional Growth as a Contractor? 💬 Today I had an insightful conversation with a contractor, and we dug into a question that’s so important in today’s workplace. "How do you ensure professional growth as a contractor?" In a landscape where projects can vary widely, contractors often juggle multiple roles, clients, and industries but maintaining consistent growth, whether through skill development, networking, or industry knowledge, can be a challenge. We discussed various ways in which they have done this and i’m curious to hear from others: 👉 How do you, as a contractor, stay on top of your game? 👉 What strategies can companies employ to help contractors grow while benefiting from their expertise? I'd love to hear of experiences that contractors have had as a way of sharing best practice and ideas. #ContractWork #ProfessionalGrowth #Engineering #ContinuousLearning

Employee Spotlight! Meet Abdulrahman Aljeemaz, Site Engineer with the Agility real estate department. Abdulrahman currently works on developing projects in Kuwait and recently received #LEED Green Associate certification. What’s a typical day for Abdulrahman and the real estate team? “The day usually starts with a morning site inspection to assess progress and quality of the work being done. We usually then have meetings with our contractors and consultants to discuss what needs to be done that day and address any issues or concerns. We’re also constantly reviewing project plans, to ensure accuracy and compliance, and also coordinate with other project team members (such as architects and inspectors) to resolve any design or construction conflicts. I have to oversee all aspects of the project to ensure it progresses smoothly, meets expectations, and is done safely." What’s his favorite part about working at Agility? “Agility aligns with my career goals and values – it’s an exciting place to grow in my career. It’s great to be part of a team where everyone works together towards common goals. Individuals are credited for their contributions and hard work, and everyone is treated as an equal at the company – it creates a sense of appreciation and inclusivity in the workplace.” What advice would Abdulrahman give to young professionals? “Be open to learning and adapting to new challenges and opportunities. Stay updated on industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices. And, most importantly, know what your career goals are and what you need to do to achieve those goals.” Interesting in joining Agility? Visit agility.com/careers!
