New report on #drowningprevention by World Health Organization It was wonderful to attend the launch of the remarkable Global Status Report on Drowning. The findings have implications for Avoidable Deaths Network research activities on avoidable #drowningdeaths. According to this report “Accurate data is critical to inform prevention strategies, yet only 65% of countries report collecting drowning data through civil registration and vital statistics systems”. Funded by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (#RNLI) the #ADN team in collaboration with Aston University, Makerere University, Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) and University of Cape Town studied data collection gap using #verbal #autopsy tool and argued that this tool is leveraged to capture the “circumstances” surrounding fatal and non fatal drowning to improve practices and interventions at national and local levels. Much needed report from #WHO at the right time to accelerate action at national and local levels. United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) University of Leicester University of Leicester School of Business
Every drowning death is one death too many, and millions of people remain at risk. The new World Health Organization report on #DrowningPrevention contains crucial data for policy-making and recommendations for urgent action to save lives: bit.ly/3ZyOAam My thanks to Mike Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies for their partnership on this lifesaving work. #Physiology must be at the heart of planning and delivery of new homes and offices to ensure we are prepared for #RisingTemperatures. This video is one of the recommendations in our report with , 'Developing a Human-centred National #HeatResilience Strategy'. The report calls for the formation of a Heat Resilience Strategy that is focused on improving the understanding of how heat impacts vulnerable groups and improving the preparedness of the nation to deal with extreme temperatures. At the parliamentary launch last year, our trustee Professor Mike Tipton shared: "We’ve seen an increase in frequency and intensity of #heatwaves, and for vulnerable people e.g. pregnant or older people, rising temperatures can cause serious cardiovascular #stress." To prepare for #heatwaves, we need to connect health professions with policy makers, local authorities and charities to deliver public health campaigns focusing on supporting vulnerable people. No one’s healthcare strategy should rely on waiting in a crowded ER during a crisis. Immigrants often face greater challenges with our healthcare system, making them more vulnerable to its shortcomings. The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum collaborates with community-based organizations to help individuals navigate the complexities of healthcare, manage costs, and access the care they need. This #GivingTuesday, support healthcare access for AANHPI communities by donating at https://lnkd.in/e8gdF-xX.
