While social determinants of health (SDOH) affect people inequitably, we all pay the cost. For example: -Unaddressed mental health inequities cost $477.5 billion (about $1,500 per person in the US) annually. -Food insecurity adds $53 billion dollars per year to the country’s healthcare costs. Conversely, evidence-based interventions targeting SDOH that would improve health outcomes would only cost $60, per patient, per month. https://lnkd.in/eXxXg87c #Hygieia #SDOH #SocialDeterminantsofHealth #healthcarecosts

There are things in this world that are more important than a single persons interests. Coming out of COVID-19, mental health issues are on the forefront of nearly every major issue. Look at health care as a whole, a system that was overly burdened with a crisis it wasn’t adequately equipped to combat in a sustainable manner. Look at women’s health care, look at veteran health care. All health systems are not created equal, access to top tier talent isn’t something everyone has. How do we even begin to change this? Well, for starters, it takes people. It takes individuals who are willing to be the change we need to see most. When the population is healthy, everything else will follow suit.

Network adequacy standards mandate that health plans maintain a sufficient number of providers and facilities to ensure that individuals have reasonable access to necessary health care services, including mental health and substance use disorder services. However, there are widening gaps between access to behavioral health care and access to medical care, and there are higher out-of-network utilization and out-of-pocket costs for behavioral health services.
