Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting is a technology that combines broadband and broadcast to enable mobile phones to receive terrestrial digital TV directly. Similar to FM radio reception on phones, D2M utilizes a built-in receiver to tap into radio frequencies, allowing the direct transmission of multimedia content to mobile devices. The key advantages include the potential to broadcast citizen-centric information, counter fake news, issue emergency alerts, assist in disaster management, and deliver live news and sports without internet data consumption. One notable feature is seamless streaming without buffering interruptions. Indeed, for consumers, this technology offers the advantage of accessing multimedia content from Video on Demand (VoD) or Over The Top (OTT) platforms without consuming mobile data, making it more cost-effective. It’s particularly beneficial for those in rural areas with limited internet access. From a business perspective, the technology provides telecom service providers with the ability to offload video traffic from the mobile network to the broadcast network. This helps in decongesting mobile spectrum, improving its utilization, and freeing up bandwidth. As a result, it can contribute to reducing call drops, increasing data speeds, and enhancing overall network performance. The rollout of D2M technology faces potential challenges, with key stakeholders, such as mobile operators, posing the biggest hurdle, according to Prasar Bharati’s CEO. Achieving a widespread launch may also require significant infrastructure changes and regulatory adjustments.Overcoming these challenges will be crucial for the successful implementation of D2M technology on a larger scale.
