Sculpture Expo Exhibition Statement: On the verge of opening Sculpture Exposition 2019, it’s  necessary to mention some points. The contemporary era is the  time of conflict between modernism and post-modernism.  Modern tendencies have been under the influence and control  of aesthetic frameworks and may be considered as aestheticformalistic principles, concentrating on sensory (visual)  elements. While post-modern tendencies prioritize the artist’s  thoughts, concepts and interactions with the world. Whereas  ideas and concepts cannot be valued by any scales or aesthetic  principles, we cannot determine the value of contemporary  artworks or place them in a value hierarchy and evaluate them.  On the other hand, post-modern world embraces the plurality of  tendencies and especially the tendencies which have been  marginalized. Walking into an Anselm Kiefer exhibition is a deeply impactful experience that simply makes you stop in your tracks in sheer wonder and amazement. Anselm Kiefer’s use of scale, texture, alchemy, biblical and historical references touching upon complicit guilt are always astounding and awe inspiring. Anselm Kiefer's art deeply intertwines with alchemy, symbolizing transformation and creation. His works, often monumental, use alchemical symbols to explore themes of history, memory, and decay. This approach allows Kiefer to address complex subjects like German history and the Holocaust, transforming materials and symbols to reflect on cultural and personal regeneration. Alchemy, for Kiefer, becomes a metaphor for artistic creation and the transformative power of art. His use and technique of “impasto” is an important aspect of his work, as it adds to the texture and dimensionality of his paintings. THE ART GENE Well, it is Caravaggio or not? Spain’s Prado Museum confirms rediscovery of lost Caravaggio, 'Ecco Homo' to be unveiled May 27 2024. (source: Associated Press) The painting was due to be auctioned in 2021, but was held back as it was suspected to be a Caravaggio. Now its authenticity has been confirmed by Spain’s Prado Museum it will go on display from May 27 until October in a one piece exhibition permitted by its anonymous owner. Once believed to have been part of the private collection of Phillip IV of Spain, it is attracting interest and much discussion - as to whether it truly appears to be created by the Italian master - and as there are only 55-60 works by Caravaggio in existence, it is set to become one of the most valuable old master artworks in the world, according to the Prado. Interesting enough in April 2021 Spanish authorities stopped the painting - then believed to have been painted by Ribera - from being auctioned and put an export ban on it after the museum alerted the government it could be a Caravaggio. The starting price at the ill fated auction? 1500 euros, whereas an original Caravaggio would be worth millions. The painting is not allowed to leave Spain without government permission. Simple Title = Huge Success Nathan Sawaya's most famous work is an original known simply as "Yellow." The life-sized yellow sculpture features a man ripping open his chest with his hands, causing 11,000-plus Legos to spill out. "It came from years of me not following my passion and wanting to pursue a different life," Sawaya tells the Broward Palm Beach New Times of his inspiration for Yellow. "The figure is literally opening itself up to the world. But like many of my works in #ArtoftheBrickExhibition there are infinite valid interpretations. I give very simple titles to my works, like Yellow, to identify the artwork, but really to provide room for the viewer to have their own interpretation. I want the viewer to have a role." On the "Highlights from the Harn: December 1 – 15, 2023," the Harn asked visitors to submit questions about the current exhibition, "Under the Spell of the Palm Tree: The Rice Collection of Cuban Art." Chief Curator and Curator of Modern Art, Dulce Román, in collaboration with Guest Curators Gabriela Azcuy and David Horta, provides expert insights to your questions. What was the biggest challenge in organizing the exhibition? Gabriela Azcuy: When working with a living collection that is still evolving and developing, reaching a final selection is complex. There were works that we acquired in December 2022 that we considered crucial to include, so we had to adjust the selection and exhibition design. Another significant challenge was ensuring that the selection of works represented all the voices within the Rice family, as there are two generations of collectors. What is the most important take-away from Under the Spell? Gabriela Azcuy: It is a deep survey of the 10-year development of the Rice Collection. This exhibition allows us to analyze ten years of work and the current status of the collection, as well as to outline future development directions. Additionally, it is a clear demonstration of the collection’s social vocation. Which artwork was the most challenging to install and why? Gabriela Azcuy: The most challenging artwork to install was Fragmento arrancado (Torn Fragment) by Manuel Mendive. It is a highly complex sculpture with a sturdy metal base and a polyform shape made of brass, which is covered with canvas. The canvas itself is a mixed media piece that includes small objects. The total weight is approximately 400 lbs., making it delicate to touch due to the painted canvas and the softness of the brass. Additionally, lifting it by the base is challenging because of its height. Therefore, the installation required time, patience, and meticulous handling.
