💻 Tech recruiters pinpoint a growing trend: recent college grads flock to Silicon Valley for their first jobs, stay for a couple of years, then move onto a less-saturated market like New York. “If you’re in tech and want to kind of live a fun life in your 20s, while also building life-changing technology during the day, New York is kind of the place to be.” Per Kai Koerber 🗞️ Per the @SanfranciscoChronicle - Young tech professionals’ priorities are changing. For Bay Area companies to retain top talent, they might need San Francisco to start shedding its “doom loop” stigma and be perceived as more fun. 💵 Now flush with wealthy investors, companies big and small, and thousands of Bay Area defectors, New York has cemented itself as the nation’s No. 2 tech hub. Its $29.5 billion in venture-capital investment in 2022 ranked second only to Silicon Valley’s $74.9 billion. #tech #netsuite #sanfrancisco #newyork https://lnkd.in/gWzSXrQJ

Appreciating (in 2024) an underappreciated reality (in the 2020s thus far): Dallas is the 5th largest tech talent hub in North America (and 4th largest in the US), and, at the State level, Texas is the No. 2 tech talent hub. #dallas #techtalenthubs #techgrowth #visualcapitalist

San Francisco, in keeping with its status as a leading Technology innovation hub, ranked in the Top Five for both Tech jobs added (~65K) and growth rate (~58%). Among the ~40 largest markets, Charlotte's Tech workforce grew at the fastest rate (~74%) and nearly doubled in size over the decade. Despite being the largest Tech market in the US, the New York Metro area grew by 26% over the past 10 years, adding more than 65K Tech jobs. These added jobs alone would make the metro the 17th largest Tech market in the country, surpassing Miami, Detroit, and Baltimore. Chicago, on the other hand, is the largest of only three Tech markets (Pittsburgh & Milwaukee) that experienced a decline in Tech workforce since 2014. Unlike other markets that also saw their Tech workforce shrink during the pandemic and then recover, Chicago's Tech workforce has continued to decline (over a 12K job decrease). #techstrategy #locationstrategy #workforcestrategy #techmarkets

According to a survey we conducted in 2022, three-quarters of tech workers living outside this region were open to relocating to Philadelphia, and 86% were open to tech jobs at non-tech firms - of which Philadelphia has plenty. Investing in pipeline programs, attracting new talent, and focusing on how tech can improve city services are all things Mayor Parker can use tech policy to boost Philly’s economy and strengthen opportunity Read more about how we can amplify our talent potential from Technical.ly: https://bit.ly/48TPpxA

Crafting Lateral Moves for Accomplished Legal Talent | Serial Entrepreneur & Strategic Advisor to Early-stage Enterprise Tech Startups
➡️ U.S. tech talent is increasingly distributed outside the country's traditional tech hubs, with cities such as Denver, Salt Lake City, Miami, Nashville, and Texas metros like Dallas, Austin, and Houston experiencing tech job growth. ➡️ This is due to emerging local tech ecosystems and a growing demand for tech roles across various industries. ➡️ Accelerated by the pandemic and remote work trends, this shift signifies a wider spread of tech innovation and job opportunities, which augurs well for the US economy. #technology #business #economy More in The Wall Street Journal article by Christopher Mims: https://lnkd.in/gHksdszu

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝗴𝗼’𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: 𝗔 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 As a co-founder of San Diego based Metropolis IQ Technology, Inc., I’m concerned about the future of San Diego's tech industry. Recent layoffs and campus closures by Novartis, Intuit, Dexcom, and Takeda highlight a troubling trend: the high cost of housing in San Diego is making it increasingly difficult for tech companies to thrive here. Using data from our MIQ Insights platform, we see a stark contrast in housing trends between San Diego and Texas. For example, while housing prices in the greater Austin area have increased from 2019 to 2024, they have done so at a much slower rate and have stabilized around $500k. In contrast, San Diego's housing prices have surged to $900k or more. This disparity is pushing talent and companies away from our region. San Diego County’s employment landscape is unique, with the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector leading in earnings per worker at $127,956. MIQ Insights shows that San Diego still has a 63% higher concentration of these high paying jobs compared to the national average, underscoring tech’s vital role in our economy. A decade ago, when I led economic development for San Diego, we knew technology companies built campuses where tech talent lived. Today, post-COVID, this dynamic has shifted. Tech employees are more mobile and prioritize quality of life, often opting to live in more affordable areas making it hard to fill desks and labs here in San Diego. Startups, in particular, are adapting by building distributed teams. In 2023, despite San Diego startups attracting more VC funding than those in Austin, Seattle, and Denver, the high cost of living is reshaping founding teams. While I'm not predicting the end of tech in San Diego, the high housing costs are a significant challenge. Local leaders are working hard to address affordability, but this is a widespread issue affecting many traditional tech hubs. It’s crucial for our economic development strategies to adapt to this new reality. At Metropolis IQ, we are helping economic and workforce developers leverage data to understand and address these challenges. https://lnkd.in/gWJegtaM #TechSector #HousingCrisis #EconomicDevelopment #MIQInsights #MetropolisIQ
