Understanding the science of connection can help us build healthier and more supportive communities for ourselves and others. Interpersonal Neurobiology, also called Relational Neuroscience, is the science of what happens inside our bodies and between us because of our interactions. Our grant funding raised last year has allowed us to further develop research in various areas including Traumatic Bran Injuries and concussions. Following a concussion, the timeline of symptom recovery varies, ranging from a few weeks to those with persistent symptoms years following the initial insult. There are currently no objective measures to identify those at risk of a prolonged recovery trajectory, which is crucial to facilitate early intervention and targeted treatment. This project, led by A/Prof Frances Corrigan, will utilise our clinically relevant pre-clinical model of concussion to investigate an array of promising biomarkers to determine which can predict outcome following concussion. Our grant funding raised last year has allowed us to further develop research in various areas including neurodegeneration. In our laboratory we investigate the role of specific neurons (called orexin neurons) in Parkinson's Disease. The orexin neurons can influence multiple functions throughout the body including motor control, sleep-wakefulness, memory, cognition, mood and gastrointestinal function. Orexin neurons are damaged in Parkinson's Disease, however, our knowledge about the causal contribution of orexin neurons in Parkinson's is very limited. Thus, further research is urgently needed.
