For anyone involved in the great debate around the proposed federal 45V hydrogen production tax credit and the alleged "induced emissions" potential created by utilizing grid energy for hydrogen electrolysis, this is a great article that highlights that ANY significant load has the potential to induce carbon emissions on the grid if there isn't sufficient renewable energy to meet the demand.
In the case of greater and greater loads on the grid from EV charging, utility imposed demand charges help to reduce the amount of electricity load that has to be met by "peaker" power plants which tend to be gas plants and increase emissions. But many think that these demand charges should be eliminated permanently because EVs are still a nascent technology. But "by disabling the steering and price signal role of demand charges, utilities and regulators are incentivizing the use of peak power capacity in the grid, as opposed to looking for ways to sustainably reduce the peak power demand draw on the grid. As a result, utilities are having to respond and build out additional peak capacity in the grid."
Many who are espousing the "3 pillars" strict requirements for the production of clean hydrogen will not support the same rules for grid energy utilized by EV charging - even though it is anticipated that to meet the expected EV fast charging demand by 2030, the grid will need to add over 38,000 MW of electricity capacity.
All this to say is that the clean hydrogen industry is not the only load that will grow on the grid over the next decade, let's stop treating it like it is and that it's the problem. It's not, and it's actually going to be the complimentary fuel and grid balancing asset that will allow and facilitate all that fast charging to come online.
