Ground-breaking ceremony for the Brainergy Hub in Jülich! The hub will become the centrepiece of the Brainergy Park Jülich GmbH, where new technologies for the energy management of the future will be developed and the energy transition in Germany can be driven forward. This important structural change project has now reached a major milestone with the ground-breaking ceremony. With a total gross floor area of 9,728 m², the Brainergy Hub will not only be energy-efficient but will also produce energy itself and supply the entire park with heating, cooling and internet. Buro Happold supported HENN architects with structural design and building services engineering. Our expertise ensures that the hub can act as a ‘pacemaker’ for the Brainergy masterplan and become a flagship project of the German energy transition. The circular design of the hub posed a particular challenge during planning. By dividing the circle into small squares and using modular construction methods, we are demonstrating what is possible with state-of-the-art technology. The hub is being built using a hybrid construction method using wood, concrete and steel, which significantly reduces the build’s CO2 footprint. PV panels on the roof and façade ensure that the building generates more renewable energy than it consumes. The Brainergy Hub will offer young start-ups from the energy sector attractive commercial space and serve as a showcase for low-carbon technologies. Our team of experts is also supporting Brainergy Park in the certification process with the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), which has already awarded the gold pre-certificate for new-build neighbourhoods. We are proud to be part of this visionary project and look forward to the start of construction.
