CA vs CPA: Which Path is Right for You? Many of us face the dilemma of choosing between the Indian Chartered Accountant (CA) and the US Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualifications. Here's my take: follow what excites you! If you're drawn to US audits, tax, or working with US-based firms, the CPA might be your best bet, though CAs can also land these roles. For success in any country, acquiring relevant skills is key— and for the US, that means the CPA. Duration: Becoming a CA usually takes 4-5 years, while you can complete the CPA in under a year. Exams: The CPA has 4 papers (covering US GAAP, tax, law, and audit), whereas the CA involves 20 papers focused on Indian standards. Cost: The CA journey costs around 1.5-2 lakhs INR, but can be more if multiple attempts are needed. The CPA costs about 3.5-4 lakhs INR, mainly due to higher exam fees. Passing % :The pass rate for CA exams is 10-15%, while CPA exams have a higher pass rate of 55-60%. Salary & Practice: CPAs typically earn 8-10 lakhs INR annually, while CAs earn about 10-12 lakhs INR. Both qualifications can lead to starting your own firm, with global opportunities if you pursue both. Career Profiles:CPAs often work in the offshore divisions of global firms in India, handling US clients. CAs usually work in the Indian divisions of Big 4 firms, focusing on auditing, taxation, advisory, and accounting. Which one should you pursue? CA results are going to be improved 🚀 Do you know why? 🔰 ICAI has recently increased the number of attempts per year for CA foundation & inter exams from 2 to 3 per year. 🔰 Reduced the number of papers in CA Inter and Final from 8 to 6 papers. These adjustments align with ICAI's Vision 2049, as recently highlighted by ICAI President, Ranjeet Agarwal Sir: “For every one trillion dollar growth in the economy, there is an expected requirement of 1 lakh chartered accountants. By the time India reaches its 100 years of independence, there will be an expected requirement of 30 lakh CAs.” Let's break it down: 🔰 CAs needed by 2047: 30,00,000 🔰 Existing CAs: 4,00,000 🔰 New CAs needed in the next 23 years: 26,00,000 (approximately 1,00,000 per year) 🔰 Students qualifying CA exams every attempt: 12,000 each attempt (24,000 per year) ICAI will have to produce 4x more CAs every year to achieve the 30 lakh mark, which may not directly result in a 4x increase in passing percentage as new students will enroll, but significant improvement is expected. Dear Sir, CA Suprio Ghatak I'm not questioning here the right of the compnay or their policies... Every company has liberty and full right to decide whom ever they want to recruit. If they want CA, then mention CA with exp and put internally what ever they want to filter as per their policy. They can take CA with single digit rank or pople who completed their CA at the age of 19. My response here is why they create discrimination in CA community by bringing no of attempts they prefer in this public platform. The vacancy post clearly shows that CA's with morethan 2 attempts are not preferred. That means it clealry creates the bias between CA's No where the professional institute The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India mentions no of attempts in the certificates. There is no official record for this. If a person meets the eligibility requirements he is a CA and member of the Institute and every member has equal right. He/She is a CA. CA...Thats it... But how these companies mention attempts requirement and create bias. I respect your constructive feedback.

Can #CA be compared to #Bcom? 😦 . . . Shocking to hear for some of you, right? But, I heard someone tell me that a CA degree is now equivalent to a Bcom degree & here's 3 basic reasons that it will never be true!! 1. ICAI is a private institution which does not accept donations in any form, there is no reservation and there is no easy way out. Only way to clear this exam is through hard work. Don't forget, it's considered as the second toughest exam in India. 2. As of the end of July 2023, approximately 3.93 lakh professionals were registered as chartered accountants (CAs) in India. In a country with population of 150 crore, there are only about ~4 lakh CAs, you see, there is a demand mismatch, while major cities have the CA working population, alot of other small cities & towns have a handful of them. 3. CA is a specialized degree with an in-depth knowledge in not just Accounts but also in - Audit, Costing, Taxation, Law, Finance and IT as well. You tell me if the B.com degree provides the same set of expertise? If you come across someone with a similar mindset, just laugh it off cause no, there is no debate about it. IAS or CA: What’s better? While scrolling through my Twitter feed, I stumbled across this interesting thread by CA Chirag Chauhan sir. The post went viral & was covered in many news sites. It definitely piqued my curiosity about why people prefer IAS to CA. I read further and realized there are several factors that people consider like satisfaction from serving society at large than a corporate job, power and respect etc. And I also saw how people were comparing these two entirely different professions. But is it right to compare the two? 🔹 Though both exams consist of three stages, one focuses on the candidate’s leadership skills, reasoning, analytical and communication ability and the other focuses on core finance, taxation, auditing, accounting, etc. 🔹 IAS is a government administration job whereas CA falls under the corporate & business world. 🔹 The perks of being an IAS officer vs the private sector lucrative packages enjoyed by CAs. 🔹 IAS exam is conducted once a year whereas CA exams are conducted twice a year. And there are so many other differences between these two careers. It depends on an individual what they want to pursue. No career is right or wrong. Are we really going to see Canadian CPA in India filing Tax Audit Report of Indian clients? Chartered accountants from the UK and Canada might be allowed to practice in India. This statement from the ICAI President Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal, given recently really amazed me. As I figured out that Average fees charged by CA in India for the Audits are ranging between Rs 5000 to Rs 80000 (ofcourse there are different area's other than Audit in which CA gives service but forsake I am considering one such core service and fees also varies) And Fresher Canadian CPA earns around 50$ per hour, makes them Rs 24,400 in a day. That's the moment I realises : How per capita Income really plays the game as a benchmark.
