This product launch is a great example of Deep Tech innovation: harnessing fundamental science for a broad scope of applications. If you had asked me ten years ago if that product was even physically possible, I probably would have answered in the negative. The laws of physics proclude non-reciprocal light propagation. However, we realized with our team at Polytechnique Montréal that we can bend the laws of physics! The secret here is to harness incoherence and randomness of multimode propagation in optical fibres. The results are simple components that are useful in many application areas. More details are found in the Castor Optics announcement.
