Groundwater is a critical resource, and managing it sustainably is essential for ensuring long-term water availability. 🌟 Key Groundwater Management Practices: - Aquifer Recharge: Replenishing groundwater by directing surface water into aquifers - Sustainable Withdrawal: Ensuring that groundwater extraction does not exceed natural recharge rates - Pollution Prevention: Protecting aquifers from contamination by managing waste and using protective barriers - Monitoring: Regularly measuring groundwater levels and quality to detect changes and address issues promptly - Water Conservation: Implementing practices to reduce water use and promote efficient water use Effective groundwater management ensures a reliable water supply for future generations and helps maintain ecosystem health. For those of you who took my GGR332 Urban Waste Management course at U.Toronto or at other universities where I was a faculty member, I am proud to let you know that the 2024 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal went to Dr. Kerry Rowe at Queens U. In the 70s and 80s he developed principles and techniques that enable the creation of landfills that can withstand changes in the environment over long periods of time.
