The availability of suitable sand is becoming a real barrier to the development of many ambitious projects. To address this, the reuse of existing materials, even those that are less suitable, is becoming an essential solution. #SustainableConstruction #Innovation #CircularEconomy #Engineering #EnvironmentalImpact #Recycling #SandShortage

🚀 Day 18 of #30DaysOfCivilEngineering! 🚀 Today, I’m focusing on groundwater management in environmental engineering. Groundwater is a critical resource, and managing it sustainably is essential for ensuring long-term water availability. 🌟 Key Groundwater Management Practices: - Aquifer Recharge: Replenishing groundwater by directing surface water into aquifers - Sustainable Withdrawal: Ensuring that groundwater extraction does not exceed natural recharge rates - Pollution Prevention: Protecting aquifers from contamination by managing waste and using protective barriers - Monitoring: Regularly measuring groundwater levels and quality to detect changes and address issues promptly - Water Conservation: Implementing practices to reduce water use and promote efficient water use Effective groundwater management ensures a reliable water supply for future generations and helps maintain ecosystem health. Stay tuned for more insights as I continue to share what I’ve learned over the past two years in my civil engineering studies! #CivilEngineering #EnvironmentalEngineering #GroundwaterManagement #Sustainability #WaterConservation #EngineeringStudent #LearningJourney #DailyPosts #SummerProject

Combine Art and Technology for #EarlyWarningsForAll New briefing note with UCL Warning Research Centre on hybrid digital and analogue #EarlyWarningSystems, based on our work in #Tamale, #Ghana, coproducing flood warning systems with communities. Providing early warning in multiple formats makes them more accessible, actionable, and useful for more people. It increases legitimacy and trust and allows the integration of multiple forms of knowledge. Thanks to Victoria Pratt and Ilan Kelman for making this happen. The early stages of any design or construction project come with big decisions, such as deciding whether to pre-select or pre-purchase equipment, and these choices can influence the timeline and budget of a project. In the latest issue of Environmental Science and Engineering magazine, pages 32 – 34, RVA’s Project Engineer, Tyler Yang, P.Eng, explores challenges and considerations for navigating this process in his article titled “Preselection and Prepurchase for Effective Project Delivery”. It is an insightful read for anyone involved in capital project delivery in the water and wastewater sector. Click the link below to read the full article. For those of you who took my GGR332 Urban Waste Management course at U.Toronto or at other universities where I was a faculty member, I am proud to let you know that the 2024 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal went to Dr. Kerry Rowe at Queens U. In the 70s and 80s he developed principles and techniques that enable the creation of landfills that can withstand changes in the environment over long periods of time. As I point out in class we don't refer to sanitary engineered landfills, planned using environmental assessment processes, as "dumps". https://lnkd.in/gvUnJVfn #sustainability #3rs #wastemanagement #planning
