The Northeastern U.S. is a forested and urban landscape with a big potential role to play in climate mitigation. Diversifying the American protein supply with alternative proteins can help reach that potential. Our new analysis shows that a 50% shift to alternative proteins could enable restoration of 5 million acres of forest land and nearly 1 million acres of wetlands, significantly increasing the region's natural habitats. At UCSC Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, we’re working to uncover how wetlands like Elkhorn Slough on Monterey Bay, can act as powerful tools in the fight against climate change. University of California, Santa Cruz PhD student, Aliya Khan is part of a research team investigating how salt marshes absorb and store carbon dioxide, locking it away for millennia and helping to cool the planet. This research comes at a critical time. With 2024 on track to be the hottest year ever recorded, innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gases are more urgent than ever. Salt marshes, which have historically been drained for agriculture or development, are now recognized as one of the most effective natural systems for carbon sequestration. Supported by a $3.5M grant from the University of California, the research spans Elkhorn Slough, the Sacramento River Delta, and South San Francisco Bay. Led by Center Principal Investigator Adina Paytan, the research team is studying how to optimize wetlands’ climate-cooling effects while addressing challenges like methane emissions and tidal flows. Early findings show that established marshes sequester more carbon than recently restored areas, reinforcing the need to protect existing ecosystems. The Victorian Government Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action has just released Victoria’s Climate Science Report 2024 (VCSR24)! 🌡️🌏 Scientell was thrilled to provide writing and editorial support for the report, which incorporates the latest climate projections for Victoria and the science of climate hazards relevant to Victoria (including floods, heatwaves and extreme heat, drought, bushfire, and sea-level rise). 🌊 This up-to-date climate science can be used by decision-makers to consider Victoria’s changing climate in risk assessments and adaptation planning. I am pleased to announce the completion of the course on Nature-Based Solutions for Disaster and Climate Resilience, conducted by the UN environment programme in 2021. This comprehensive program provided valuable insights into leveraging natural ecosystems to mitigate the impacts of disasters and climate change. The course covered a range of topics including ecosystem-based adaptation, sustainable land management, and the integration of nature

Our new paper in Science, led by Matt Jones at University of East Anglia, shows the massive increase in global carbon emissions from forest fires in the extratropics -- forests in the temperate and boreal latitudes, including western North America -- associated with climate change. So what can we do? In temperate forests in the western US and Canada, we know that proper forest management, including prescribed fire and ladder fuel removal, can substantially mitigate more severe fires and C emissions, particularly where past fire suppression has contributed to higher fuel density. https://lnkd.in/g93ZZ2aD
