NAIC's 2023 "Examining the Returns" biennial report proves once again that investing with diverse managers does not require compromising returns. As in prior years, the study shows how diverse-owned private equity firms — represented by the NAIC Private Equity Index — significantly outperformed the BURGISS benchmark median returns for net IRR, net TVPI and DPI over the period studied. As NAIC President & CEO Robert L. Greene (Bob) points out in the report, "Simply put, investing with diverse managers adds significant value to portfolios and drives stronger returns." However, despite ongoing proof of superior results, many institutions remain reluctant to meaningfully allocate capital to diverse managers, who collectively manage less than 2% of the industry’s total assets. Don't miss the industry's only comprehensive study quantifying the performance of diverse-owned private equity firms. Bridge builder among asset managers, distributors and data. Lover of books, trees, and grandfather clocks. Most importantly, Mom of two.
😯 I wasn't expecting to find life and career wisdom when studying for CAIA L2 and I doubt Mssrs. Ashby Monk and Gordon Clark had it in mind when writing about governance for long term investors (LTIs). 💡 Their concept of Idiosyncratic Advantage stood out to me for its applicability to life and to one's self-evaluation of their career. In the below, consider yourself the "investor". It's worth quoting in full: "Idiosyncratic Advantages: chosen metrics should not diminish investors’ ability to cultivate their own unique comparative advantages. With insourcing and re-intermediation, LTIs may develop entirely new and idiosyncratic capabilities and resources that reflect, in part, their origins and distinctive goals and objectives. These developments could affect not only LTIs’ investment strategies and their implementation but also their place in the market for investment opportunities. As a result, the measures and metrics chosen by an LTI need to be sensitive to their unique circumstances and discount the temptation to default to common practice. In many cases, institutional investors are too focused on what each other is doing. While valuable for benchmarking purposes, for asset owners to succeed they must cultivate their own comparative advantage (as is the case in many industries marked by innovation; see Gertler, 2003)." 🕰 We, as individuals, are long term investors -- in ourselves! 🌈 Each of us has idiosyncratic advantages 📏 As with asset owners, the challenge is to identify the appropriate metric by which to judge ourselves. 🔎 "Defaulting to common practice" is easier, but then you risk overlooking your advantage -- in life and in the marketplace. (Works for employers, too!) Source: https://lnkd.in/ekJD3Vdk #caia #investinyourself #idiosyncratic
