International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Post

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to The World Bank: the global consensus calls for nuclear expansion, this needs financial support. Yesterday in Washington, DG Grossi shared with the World Bank's Executive Board the IAEA’s perspective on nuclear energy and said that the IAEA is ready to provide technical support to multilateral development banks #MDBs on nuclear infrastructure development including nuclear safety, security and safeguards. The World Bank and other MDBs currently do not contribute financing to nuclear power new build projects. DG Grossi said that financing nuclear power would better align MDBs with the “new global consensus” forged at #COP28, where the world called for accelerating nuclear power deployment along with other zero emission energy technologies to achieve decarbonization. atoms.iaea.org/4cji5lH

Is it in these countries and the World Bank's best interests to invest in these countries, or is it not better to wait until fusion energy becomes available, as it would be a better option? Until then, increase funding for renewables, batteries, geothermal and gas, and develop renewable hydrogen to generate electricity and heat. Rather than go down the fission path, which has a higher likelihood of associated geopolitical issues, plant repair costs and maintenance, plant weaponisation, access to water and other problems peculiar to nuclear and its costs that many small and even larger countries cannot afford or need, there is also the capability, reliability of supply and logistics of fuel supply reports and its relatively reducing quantity around the world and then there are the concerns that these plants take substantial time and well-educated labour that many of these countries do not have, and so will need to pay to have the plant operated and maintained causing worsening of the countries economy

We need to have clean energy... nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is the best option. It needs to be promoted. Financing for nuclear power is the hurdle but we have to consider the long term benefits of setting up nuclear plants especially when we are looking for alternative sources of energy. Thank you IAEA for sharing.
