At #INVEMAR, 28 experts from 17 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean analysed the results of the #IAEATCP in marine environment and charted a way forward with the new#Arcal project RLA7028 “Strengthening Regional Capabilities on the Application of Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques to Increase Knowledge about Stressors that Affect Marine and Coastal Sustainable Management”.Within the realms of  #REMARCO, experts discussed the most pressing needs in ocean acidification, harmful algal bloom, microplastics pollution, blue carbon and eutrophication that can be tackled with the use of isotopic, nuclear, and other techniques.Joined by representatives of the Cartagena Convention Secretariat, IO Caribe-UNESCO, and Instituto Antártico Argentino the meeting participants highlighted the full potential of REMARCO and how to scale up the impact of #IAEA assistance.

Climate change is already here, evident in dry fields in Africa, in floods in Central Asia, and in record heat levels across the world. Nuclear technologies and techniques can help societies adapt to climate disruptions. Isotope hydrology uses radioisotopes as tracers to analyze water flows, making it possible to better manage precious groundwater sources, for example. We invest heavily in climate action, pandemic control, nuclear safety, and the control of disruptive technologies. These are noble things, indeed. None of these 4 above concerns has ever destroyed a human empire. They were dead on their feet. They could not know why. Humans in ceaseless conflict is unnatural. That foretells the future. Stationary cultures arrive at self-interest—a DNA-based insult. The breakdowns all look the same. It one day arrives to perpetuated, monetized, and mindless conflict. A transformative shift must occur. Human sustainability will NOT be a random arrival. We need help, and we need data. Scientists at the IAEA are helping local researchers find dangerous biotoxins in marine algae that can lead to outbreaks of contaminated seafood. Using nuclear and isotopic techniques, researchers can accurately measure biotoxins and study how they are transferred from organism to organism, making their way up the food chain and potentially reaching our plates. atoms.iaea.org/3LEIdvL
