The grid of the future will be dominated by power electronics. Understanding their behaviour, the unique oscillatory phenomena that can occur and the tools to analyze them is of key importance to safeguard reliability, as highlighted by the recent FERC order 901. I highly recommend this #cigre webinar on ‘MULTI-FREQUENCY OSCILLATIONS IN POWER-ELECTRONIC-BASED ENERGY SYSTEMS’ which will be worth waking up early for by North American audiences. Breakfast-and-learn :-)
Exciting event is coming! I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming CIGRE webinar (next Monday, Feb 12th) from working group C4.49 – “Multi-frequency oscillations in power electronic based energy systems” driven by myself and Christoph Buchhagen from TenneT. During the webinar we will hear about new forms of instabilities and interactions driven by power electronic converters in modern power systems. The content will be presented by world class experts in this engineering domain from Ørsted, TenneT, Aalborg University, Hitachi Energy, Universitat Politècnica de València, Shell. If of interest, please register using this link: https://lnkd.in/d2y6z6aa where you will also find a short overview of the work involved and what to expect from the webinar. Thank you Christoph, Xiongfei, Mats, Ramon, Yin, Jun Bum for moving it forward.

I’m thrilled to share that I graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Sarajevo last week, earning my Master of Engineering 😊 My thesis focused on photovoltaic systems and smart grids, where I analyzed the distribution network in Sarajevo using PowerFactory DIgSILENT. I proposed solutions for upgrading it to a smart grid and demonstrated how renewable energy can enhance the reliability and stability of the power system in Sarajevo. Vidimo se na doktoratu 🫡

Electric power (drive) systems for industries, refrigeration, industrial heat pumps, renewable energy, decarbonisation, propulsion, mission equipment and e-mobility
One of the many interesting topics at the PCIC event in Rotterdam early June 2024. Traditional high-power compressor applications have relied on steam or gas turbines as primary drivers. In response to the growing emphasis on clean energy initiatives, the industry is shifting towards electric motors as an alternative to turbine drivers. When speed control and therefore variable speed drives (VSD) are required, their reliability become a concern. As the risk of unplanned process interruptions is to be mitigated, hot redundancy concepts were developed. This case study focuses on the application of such a VSD redundancy concept for the High Pressure and Refrigeration Compressor services within the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) process. The selection of VSD technology was driven by specific process requirements, including the need for minimal switch-over time. #turbinetoelectric

Chief Technology Officer / The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE), FASME
US DOE Department of Energy Announces $8 Million to Advance Electrolyzer and Fuel Cell Manufacturing RD&D Asha-Dee Celestine and her team at DOE HFTO and Dr. Iryna Zenyuk of the National Fuel Cell Research Center Irvine, California are presenting at SAMPE Long Beach. https://lnkd.in/eZKNgp_t The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $8 million for up to 15 research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) projects that leverage DOE's Roll-to-Roll (R2R) Consortium. This funding provides an opportunity for private sector entities to partner with national labs to receive funding via cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory will manage the selection of these projects, which will complement manufacturing and recycling efforts funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and help fast-track the growth of the clean hydrogen economy as laid out in the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap. Through this funding, DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) seeks to accelerate development of affordable manufacturing processes and characterization tools for water electrolyzers and fuel cells focusing on materials synthesis processes; colloidal science, rheology, and formulations; roll-to-roll coating process development; quality control technique development; advanced materials characterization (e.g., electron microscopy, X-ray scattering and spectroscopy); electrochemical testing; and advanced computing (e.g., synthetic reactors CFD modeling, coating process modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence). The R2R Consortium's mission is to advance efficient, scalable, high-throughput, and high-quality manufacturing methods and processes for clean hydrogen technologies to accelerate domestic manufacturing and reduce the capital cost of durable and high-performing fuel cells and water electrolyzer systems. Consortium objectives include understanding material and process behavior to advance methods to increase energy efficiency, reduce material usage, reduce waste, and reduce equipment cost in manufacturing processes, as well as enabling high-throughput manufacturing processes. The available $8 million will provide funds to the R2R Consortium to support industry-led cooperative projects over an expected two-year duration. Proposed projects must involve a partnership between an industrial entity and two or more national labs that are part of the R2R Consortium. DOE encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as participation by disadvantaged or underserved communities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or other minority serving institutions. Concept papers are due by June 3, 2024, and full applications are due by July 15, 2024. Eligibility information, application requirements, and instructions can be found on the R2R CRADA Call website.
