As vehicle theft continues to be a significant concern in Ontario, insurance rates for the province’s most stolen vehicles have seen a marked increase. This trend is a direct consequence of rising theft claims, prompting insurers to adjust premiums accordingly. Top Targets Recent data reveals that certain makes and models are disproportionately targeted by thieves. Among the most stolen vehicles in Ontario are: - Honda CR-V: This popular SUV has topped the list due to its high resale value and demand for parts. - Lexus RX Series: Luxury vehicles like the Lexus RX are prime targets for their high market value. - Toyota Highlander: Known for its reliability and popularity, the Toyota Highlander is also frequently stolen. - Ford F-Series: Pickup trucks, particularly the Ford F-150, are common targets due to their versatility and popularity. - Chevrolet Silverado: Similar to the Ford F-Series, the Silverado’s high value makes it attractive to thieves. Impact on Premiums Insurance companies determine premiums based on several factors, including the risk of theft. When certain vehicles are repeatedly targeted, the cost of insuring these vehicles increases. For instance, a driver of a Honda CR-V or Lexus RX in Ontario may find their insurance premiums significantly higher than those of less targeted vehicles. Owners of top stolen vehicles can expect to see higher premiums as insurers mitigate the financial risk associated with potential theft claims.

Losing a single car without filing an insurance claim is already too much. We've seen dealerships lose dozens of vehicles without submitting insurance claims because they can't afford to risk losing their coverage. If five vehicles, each worth an average of $30,000, are stolen, the total loss is not just $150,000. It also includes the potential service revenue over time and any income from trade-ins that could have been used to purchase the vehicles. For dealers who are willing to forgo this significant financial impact to maintain their insurance, consider this: for the same amount—$150,000—you could purchase over 2,500 LoJack devices. Given that the average dealer earns $300 to $600 in profit per LoJack sold, that same $150,000 loss in stolen vehicles could have generated over $1.5 million in additional profit. Even more importantly, for every customer who buys a LoJack, the dealer not only helps protect the client’s investment but also provides the peace of mind that, if the vehicle isn't recovered, the customer could receive up to $10,000. This level of protection is likely to encourage the customer to return for future purchases, benefiting the dealership in the long run.
