"The trips people make are shaped by the transportation options they have." This is a really important, and should be an obvious point from transit YouTuber Reece Martin. And yet, it's something that so many people in transportation planning, financing and government ignore. We justify not doing things like building better transit systems "because people don't do it already". Perhaps they don't do it because the options just aren't there, rather than they don't want to. Sometimes transport use is low not because the demand isn't there, but more because the transit that does exist is just so unfit for purpose. Here he makes a very eloquent case for New York, where reframing how transit is built could transform not just how New York City functions, but the people in the entire region. This is particularly important in North America where transit systems are often drawn along municipal lines that don't interact with each other very well. Paris, Tokyo and London have transformed themselves by creating infrastructure that cuts across the city and brings in the surrounding regions. It's time places like the Tri-State Area, the GTA or what might be the Northern Powerhouse in the UK figured out the same.

A Plan to Transform New York’s Railways

I'd take public transit between cities if it existed (here it mostly doesn't at all), and wasn't stupid (yes, I have a definition for stupid, not enough space here to define right now). Give me options that actually solve my travel problems, and not just ones that are the cheapest to create. I took public transit for work 20 years ago all the time. That bus trip was always full, of IT professionals, and doctors, lawyers, a Queens Council prosecutor, a judge...so it's not just people who can't appord to drive that take transit. Now that bus trip doesn't exist, and the GO train is a worse trip (longer, not on weekends...).

If the majority of the transportation options you have all terminate at Union Station, then Union Station will continue to be the Centre of the Universe, GTA-wise that is.

I once spoke with a business owner who didn't have a website. We were chatting because he wanted wasn't generating enough revenue and wanted to grow his business. When discussing if he should have a website, he mentioned that there was no point - all his work comes through referrals. When I pointed out that he might only be getting referrals because there is no way for strangers to reach him a light bulb seemed to go off... This feels like that.
