I had the rare privilege of being a part of a BYP Leeds gathering for the very first time yesterday and it was totally worth it. It was interesting to hear from leaders at Lloyds Banking Group about their squiggly career growth. Key take-aways from the panelists: Victoria Leslie-Kent - The quicker you can build relationships, the faster you can progress your career (Major take away for me) Rose St Louis highlighted the importance of showing up, not just for yourself but for those around you and your community. Rose in response to my question on whether each of the panelists were focused on roles in leadership positions or just went with the wave, stressed the importance of shaping your current role beyond the job description (owning your role) and then defining what you love to do and don't love to do as time goes on, as this helps to shape your career progression. Paul Speight's point on breaking down hierarchy resonated deeply with me and hearing that from a leader in corporate was somewhat re-assuring. He stressed how critical it is for leaders to create an environment that allows for vulnerability where everyone can fulfil their potential. He also shared that he only started figuring life out at 30, which counters the societal pressure to have everything figured out in your 20s, else you failed. I must say I left the event feeling more inspired and empowered to be more, not just for myself but also for the black community I represent. Thanks for pulling this together. #BlackHistoryMonth
