Charmaine Nelson on Black History in the American North and Canada : Nelson discussed her research as well as her initiatives in uplifting the Black Canadian community - By Eve Neumann, February 29, 2024, The Massachusetts Daily Collegian The American South is one of the most focused-on regions within the studies of slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Over time, the illusion that the American North and Canada have been “safe havens” for slaves to escape from the horrors of the South and tropical regions have been widely spread as fact. Studies on slavery in the American North and Canada are limited and the lack of historical studies in this topic has resulted in research gaps on the racism studied throughout the U.S. and Canada…. Canada has an extensive history of slavery, with the practice lasting over 200 years in the region. According to Nelson, there is no history on the transatlantic Canadian slave trade taught in schools, and there is a lack of common knowledge that it even occurred. “Canada and the U.S. North… [are] two regions that have completely neglected their histories of transatlantic slavery to the point of creating a mythology that says they were only abolitionists,” said Nelson. “The level of hypocrisy in the American North and Canada is the same in terms of the profound erasure of centuries of histories of enslaving,” she added. Laurent-Perrault, E. (2020). Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, the quintessential maroon: toward an African diasporic epistemology. This essay engages Vanessa K. Valdés’s Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg. It traces Valdés’s main contributions and notes that her work invites readers to expand their views of Schomburg’s Afro-Caribbean/Latinx/Latin American identity and his complex personality, as well as his relentless but gentle commitment to advancing black liberation. Following Saidiya Hartman’s strategy of “critical fabulation” to highlight previously silenced Afro-Epistemes, the author dwells on Schomburg’s childhood, life commitment, and legacies. Part of the essay’s purpose is to sketch the transnational community of formerly enslaved and free men and women from whom Schomburg inherited what the author calls his Maroon political consciousness. The essay also emphasizes how Valdés invites African diaspora scholars, activists, educators, artists, and so on to reflect on and trouble preconceived ideas about Maroon subjectivity, marron age, and Africa. It concludes by imagining ways Schomburg would engage our present. Issue Section: Book Discussion: Vanessa K. Valdés, Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg Maroon, marron age, black dignity, Afro-epistemes, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, Afro-Latin American, black liberation
