Back in the day, if you were in sales and needed a new job, opportunities were plentiful. Maybe a company would let go of a few underperforming salespeople, but they would quickly find new roles. Fast forward to 2024, and I'm seeing many sales professionals, from Account Managers to Channel Account Managers to Customer Success Managers, all looking for work. The number of applicants for these roles is in the hundreds (and this is true for other professions as well). Sales has always been the lifeblood of a company, so what does this mean? Are more people entering the sales field with less jobs? Are companies cutting their salesforces and expecting fewer people to do more? Or is the competition in each market segment so intense that companies are losing market share and having to spread the work more thinly? Getting into sales is competitive right now. There are more candidates than job opportunities. So if you’re looking to get into a role, you need to help yourself. That means: 1️⃣ Being able to explain 'why' you want to get a sales job. A hiring manager is unlikely to give you a position because you couldn’t find anything else so you thought “I’ll try sales” 2️⃣ Apply for roles, speak to people in roles, and pick up the phone. The phone is king right now. If you don’t answer your phone and try to communicate only by email then sales isn’t for you. 3️⃣ Keep going. I can’t think of anyone that we’ve placed who only applied for one job and got it. That doesn’t happen on the job hunt, and it certainly won’t happen when you’re in a role trying to find customers. Most people “fall” into a sales role. It’s how I ended up in sales after coming back from 2 years of travelling. And we think that is a shame. I started in an entry-level sales role and moved through to sales leadership and now own a business. Sales has taught me everything. You can build your: -confidence -self-awareness -communication skills (of course, earning potential) And once you can drive revenue yourself or drive performance in a revenue-producing team, you’ll have some VERY valuable skills. And those skills can open a lot of doors. I don’t see another career that can: -pay you so well -teach you so much -create so many opportunities #salescareer #saleshiring #salesdevelopment P.S. I can count on one hand the number of people that said they wanted to be a salesperson when they grew up. But I know a lot of people that say they wish they had discovered their sales career sooner. I think that times and the perception of a sales career are changing though. And that means that good sales roles are even more competitive. If you want to stand out then have a think about why sales is a skill that you want to learn. The best candidates can always articulate this clearly.
