They're good people – but are GUILTY of this … – Getting caught wearing pajama bottoms during video calls. – Coming up with the perfect strategy in the shower only to forget it before writing it down. – Taking their work with them on holiday because they're growing. – Shouting at their laptops during last-minute Zoom updates. – Spending ages writing linkedin posts only to delete them after 5 minutes. – Taking walks that turn into entire photoshoots for social media. – Turning their car into a mobile office, complete with snack stash. — Annoying their friends and family by being obsessed with work (I migh have done some of those too — allegedly.) Are you finding time for hobbies? I’ve let myself down — too much of this: … Too much work (the blessing and curse of big ambitions and wanting to have an impact) Not enough surfing and exploring earth (we only live once). Those 2 pull me in different directions in many ways. Can you relate? After moving to London from Cape Town in 2009 I went from surfing and sea swimming almost daily to land-locked hustle culture with the odd break at the coast. I really want to make the ocean a big part of my future. Have you had to sacrifice a hobby to live where you are or to do what you do? What would you change in 2025? Sometimes life gets in the way of our hobbies. How can we create more time as super-busy professionals? I’m acutely aware of the limited time we have on this planet. You? Have a good one. Ian 🤙🏼 #life #growth #positive The two things in response to comments: (1) I am an adrenaline junky (and have a dopamine deficiency) and love surfing and swimming in bigger/wild waves. I'm near the beach in the UK but it's the adrenaline that's missing. The odd surfing trip doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. Need to have access to the action regularly without much hassle – working on making that possible at the moment. (2) I managed to go remote years ago and would be able to work as a "solo" businessperson remotely and live a comfortable life as a legal consultant. That's not enough for me I'm afraid. I want to have an impact. It's a lot harder to find time when you feel duty-bound to make a difference.

In 2018, I hit reset + pivoted. It crashed my "career" but crazy things happened: ... Since 2009 I built numerous startups. Some worked, others didn't. One was on track for a possible sale but then imploded. I was on an upward trajectory despite numerous setbacks. But I lacked purpose. (Been there?) I wasn’t energised. (Ever also felt like a robot?) SO I HIT RESET: Pivoted into law (I learned the law since my 20s through real world business endeavours and problems so it was just a case of diving in formally). And came up with ideas to shake up the industry to have as big of an impact as possible. ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ My previous career was money-centred. My new career is all about putting people first. It's like a new lease on life: energising and sustainable. ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ The legal services industry is a tough nut to crack. I almost lost everything trying to break into it.
