The Platinum Group Blog from Bagnalls at Black Country Chamber of Commerce Bagnalls attended the careers fair in Otley to talk to students about their apprenticeship schemesBagnalls recently attended a Year 9–13 careers fair at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley. They had around 1,000 visitors looking to learn more about their apprenticeship offerings and Management Trainee Scheme. There was lots of engagement with students – as well as their parents and carers – who were pleased to learn about the benefits of starting an apprenticeship with Bagnalls and the scope for career progression within their company. The school’s headmistress commented: “The feedback we have received has been extremely positive, particularly about the quality of information and advice given. “Many students have said that they are now in a position to consider careers they would never have considered before. “Thank you for giving up your personal time to support our young people!”

MPM recently visited a Careers Fair at UTC Leeds to inspire 15–18-year-old students about the diverse opportunities in manufacturing. The team highlighted the critical role apprentices play at MPM, emphasising the benefits of apprenticeships and how they can help improve the industry skill-gap. Following on from a post my friend Anna Hegarty posted a few weeks ago about an event she was running at a local Secondary School where she had requested people to provide questions to pose to those who had chosen to not to go to University and instead enter the world of work. I thought I would post the questions I suggested here for those of you who didn't choose the University route to answer, retrospectively, to help those young people considering a similar move: 1. What advice would you give someone considering not going to University? 2. If you could do it again, is there anything you’d do differently? 3. What advice would you go back and give your 17/18 year old self? 4. What skills do you think employers find most valuable for those starting their first job? 5. Are there any common misconceptions about working without a degree that you’d like to clarify? 6. How has entering the workplace straight from school impacted your career in the long term? 7. In what way did starting work earlier give you an advantage? Of course, entering the world of work is one option but Apprenticeships are another route that allow an individual to continue learning but, on the job, so to speak. And, with the Apprenticeship Careers Fair coming up next week at the Kia Oval on Tuesday 5th November, it seemed timely to share. To get the most out of these fairs, I would suggest preparing the following: 1. Do some research beforehand to find out who is exhibiting and identify which employers you wish to meet 2. Set a goal or two for you to aim to achieve with every employer you meet 3. Prepare a list of questions to ask them to help you understand their recruitment process and how best to prepare for each stage and the timelines 3. Prepare a short elevator pitch and practice delivering it 4. Have ready copies of your stand out CV so you can leave with them Good luck!

I now have a tenuous link with that coming-of-age classic, thanks to being an Enterprise Adviser at Ruislip High School in west London, which was the location for Rudge Park Comprehensive. Prompted by a post from Rob Illidge, I’ve been thinking about what we do, as businesses and professionals, to support schools in preparing the next generation of workers. I’ve asked a number of my connections for help with this and most have brushed me off or plain ignored me but others like James Willetts, Lewis Ellis and Fraser Chapman have gone out of their way to offer their time, help and guidance which has made a real and measurable difference to students futures. When these fantastic young people enter the world of work I hope they return to the companies that have supported them. At NetWeaver - Web Hosting, I’m proud of the support we’ve provided to local schools, both in terms of time to support events and sponsorship, and training in the form of apprenticeships. I can say with absolute certainty that some of our very best people came through this route. We all have opinions on the next generation but unless we’re doing all we can to support them, our opinion has no value at all. If we want the best people in our companies, we need to help them get there. So, what could you do? Could you support an event at your local school? Pay for some equipment? Offer a placement? Take on an apprentice? Offer an online course? If you’re anywhere near Bolton I can probably hook you up with a contact at our amazing UTC. We have a careers fair coming up. If you’re not, send a couple of emails - you might just be amazed at how much you get out of it. #education

A Job and Apprenticeship Fair is set to take place in Flint next month. The event is being held on Thursday, 13 February, at Flint Town Hall, running from 3 pm to 6.30 pm, and is free for all attendees Organised by Flint Town Council in collaboration with Jobcentre Plus, the fair is designed to connect residents with local employers and apprenticeship providers. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about available roles, explore training pathways, and network with representatives from various industries.
