Dr. Veena Srinivasan, a water expert from our 'Shaping a Water-Wise Future through Education' panel, envisions bridging the gap between classroom learning and the natural world. She highlights that water is experienced in student's everyday lives and education should bridge their real-world engagement with water with knowledge in books, helping them develop a more integrated understanding of this precious resource that shapes their lives. Our #buildings were designed for a #climate that no longer exists. Climate zone migration is affecting us in ways and speeds we are not ready for. Fascinating and timely article on how warming is affecting schools, students and teachers. Many of these facilities were already pushing the limits of their useful life. And relatedly - a chapter in my forthcoming Island Press book. It is time for a public building #passivhaus #retrofit program. "But as the burning of fossil fuels heats the planet, it’s delivering longer-lasting, more dangerous heat waves, and higher average temperatures. Across much of the northern United States, where many schools were built without air conditioning, districts are now forced to confront the academic and health risks posed by poorly cooled schools. Fixing the problem often requires residents to pass multimillion dollar school repair bonds, which can be hard to do. Climatic change is arriving faster than most can adapt." #architecture #cooling #globalwarming #climatechange #citiesforpeople https://lnkd.in/gZaU47kQ

If you are a Sustainability/ESG professional or work in a corporate foundation, please pay attention to climate resilience projects in public schools. Most of them, even in developed countries, are unprepared for harsh weather, especially extreme heat. Lack of air conditioning or shadowed areas, no trees or vegetation to help control the heat are just some of the problems schools are facing right now.

I sometimes feel sorry for climate activists etc. who started in the 1970s. It must feel futile sometimes. We really do know what to do but for one reason or another we still seem to make a lot of poor decisions. That's why we must keep the pressure up and keep inspiring the next generation to do better than we have. So if you have kids, take a look at this wonderful list of educational links and resources from the #Passivhaus Trust website. Construction can get so much better. https://lnkd.in/egaVJjSA #EcoHomes #EnergyEfficiency #PassiveHouse #ClimateChange

📚 NEW ISSUE ALERT! 📚 With the #climate crisis upon us, this issue of Education Business explores what schools can do to reduce their #carbonfootprint. Tom Wigg from the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) shares insights into how schools can reduce both operational and embodied carbon within their buildings. We also get an update from the Let's Go Zero campaign on their month of climate action initiative, with simple ideas such as uniform swap shops and encouraging active travel. There’s also advice on fire safety for #SEND schools from SOCOTEC UK, and a look at remote learning four years on from the Covid-19 #pandemic by Victoria Temple from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Elsewhere we focus on the importance of play for school children, with both the Association of Play Industries (API) and Learning through Landscapes sharing their thoughts. Plus Robyn Quick examines whether banning social media for children is the right thing to do, as well as how to get children learning #FirstAid. Hayley Sherwood meanwhile discusses why we should be prioritising Personal Development in schools, and Justine Lee from the SCHOOL TRAVEL FORUM LTD discusses how to make sure school trips are accessible and inclusive for everyone. We also reveal the shortlist for our very own #EBAwards, taking place this June. Link to the digital issue is in the comments.

Due to the lack of creativity and widely spread standard approach within the humanitarian organizations, I have decided to start a series of postings of recommendations. And here, we go with the first one! Some recommendations to the organizations implementing tree planting as a form of whatever e.g. Climate change adaptation, Environmental impact, economic support to the people in need, education etc. Three planting is a tool that should be done to reach something valuable. We are not planting trees for the sake of planting trees. Instead, you can organize tree planting bringing schoolchildren, putting the name of the schoolchild on the tree he/she planted thus ensuring that the child will take care of this tree and will always value the green, environment and all respective consequences of it. In other words, make it meaningful, long run and efficient.
