'Old and Rare' Scotch Whisky. I was talking about it, last night. To gauge the size of just this one segment, of a HUGE Industry, really depends on what your definition of 'Old and Rare' is? For instance, would you reckon that a £1300 bottle of 1988 Glenburgie is 'Old And Rare'? If so, it's probably a larger segment than you think. Although obviously, nobody's going to tell you this. Well...apart from me. Nobody knows how many Scotch Whisky Casks are maturing in Scotland. I do but because were told, 'it's hard to say', were told 'about 20 million'. That's for ALL 145 Distilleries and the DOZENS of mega-maturation places we have, all over Scotland, some, larger than entire villages. According to me and all the places I've visited and dozens of Industry Experts and because I have a rudimentary grasp of 'sums', I've been reliably told and therefore, figured out, it's: ...'about rather a lot more than 20 million'. So far, in over 20 years, nobody has corrected me, so let's erm...conservatively... say, 45,000,000-ish? That's Casks, not Bottles. Out of this amount, (that nobody corrects me on), how many of these maturing Casks are from the tail-end of the 20th Century, say 1988? Spoiler Alert: It's, 'quite a lot'. So, that's £1300 x 'quite a lot'. Follow me for more #ScotchWhiskyTruths.

The Campbeltown region. 🥃 It’s tiny. In fact, it’s the smallest of the 5 Scotch whisky producing regions, but once a thriving hub of Scotch whisky production. Where is Campbeltown? The Campbeltown region is located by the Campbeltown Loch on the remote Kintyre peninsula of western Scotland. How many distilleries belong in the Campbeltown region? Three. Sorry, three? 😲 Yes, you read that correctly. They are Springbank Distillers Ltd, Glen Scotia and Glengyle Distillery. Why is the Campbeltown region so small? It once was a thriving region of whisky production with more than 30 distilleries in the area. However, the effects of WW1 and WW2 as well as the American prohibition took its toll on the region and distilleries struggled to continue. For many years, the region’s distilleries amounted to just two – Glen Scotia and Springbank - but in November 2000 Glengyle (which had originally closed in 1925) re-opened its doors, producing whisky under the name of Kilkerrin. Are any other distilleries set to open? Yes, Witchburn Distillery, Dal Riata Distillery, and The Machrihanish Distillery are set to open in the coming years. Does Campbeltown whisky have a particular flavour profile? Not really. It produces whisky that encompasses many different flavour profiles from fruit to spice and even a bit of smokiness. Can I visit? Definitely. In fact, it’s a great region to visit. A visit to one of the distilleries is like stepping back in time 150 years, as little has changed in terms of production methods since then. In fact, Springbank even has a malting floor, which is a very rare thing these days. Any festivals I should know about? Yes, every year in May the town hosts the Campbeltown Malts Festival where the distilleries, and Wm Cadenhead Ltd (Scotland’s oldest independent bottler) throw open their doors for tours, masterclasses, live music and special bottlings. Are you a fan of Campbeltown whisky? Have you visited before? Old Forester adds to Whisky Row Series Brown-Forman-owned Old Forester has launched 1924, a 10-year-old Bourbon that features a new mashbill for the brand. The new expression is made from 79%, corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley – a deviation from the brand’s traditional 72% corn and 18% rye bill. It is the fifth expression in the series and the oldest to date. The whiskey honours the 100th anniversary of when Old Forester first acquired barrels from closed distilleries, giving it different mashbills to bottle. During Prohibition, Old Forester received one of six permits allowing it to continue producing whiskey for medicinal purposes. In 1924, four years after Prohibition began, Owsley Brown, the eldest son of George Garvin Brown, began receiving said barrels. “We are honoured to commemorate this historic milestone with a new featured mashbill and a beautiful 10-year age statement,’” master taster Melissa Rift said. “It allows whisky lovers to taste just how dynamic our brand can be while staying rooted in our rich history.” Old Forester 1924 is bottled at 50% ABV, priced at US$115, and will be available nationwide. It has notes of chocolate-covered graham cracker dusted with cinnamon and aromas of fudge, cured tobacco, and rich oak. The new whiskey joins 1870 Original Batch, 1897 Bottled in Bond, 1910 Old Fine Whisky, and 1920 Prohibition Style in the Whiskey Row series. Each bottling highlights an important moment in Old Forester’s 153-year history. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland #scottish #scottishbusiness https://lnkd.in/gcPvfw5M

As far as the availability of fine whiskies worldwide is concerned, it is necessary to dwell on the wide difference (see the in-post chart) between the quantity of bottles produced in recent years and the number of active distilleries, decidedly below the historical average. There are certainly two lines of production to be considered in this regard. On the one hand, in fact, it is important to note that, despite the large quantity of spirits produced, the permanent shortage of bottles of “investment” whisky suggests that the quantities of whisky intended for consumption – meaning the latter as “commercial” whiskey – do not influence the production of that intended for collecting and investment, because the quantities produced of the latter are always infinitely small to meet their demand which is increasingly high and which pushes – and will continue to drive – their prices towards a continuous rise. Another useful observation is that, if the number of active distilleries is currently below the historical average, it means that there are even fewer distilleries producing fine whisky than in the past, and this once again acts as a powerful profit multiplier for those who have invested in bottles of rare spirits. Monday whisky knowledge - what is single malt whisky? Often considered ‘superior’ among experts, single malt whisky has been made in Scotland since the 18th century. Blended whisky is created from single malt whiskies and grain whiskies taken from different distilleries. A single malt whisky can only be produced from a single distillery. But it can also be made using a single variety of malted grain, typically malted barley. However, single malt whisky need not be the product of one single whisky cask. They are almost always a blend of whiskies taken from several casks. So as long as these casks are all from the same distillery, the final ‘blend’ is considered a single malt. #SingleMaltWhisky #WhiskyKnowledge #WhiskyEducation #MaltMonday For more information about single malt whisky, contact us today: https://ow.ly/HQ4l50SwApg
