Methodological papers remain among my favorite publications, especially those that challenge common practices and provide additional insights into quantitative analyses. In this paper, we show that ratio-measures are suboptimal to use in research on risk factors, causes and mechanisms. In fact, they can lead to spurious findings, because they can be considered interaction-terms without main effects. This particularly holds for ratio-measures that rely on division of two biological entities. Examples include: Body mass index and other body composition indices Biochemical ratios, such as LDL/cholesterol-ratios and amyloid-b42/40 ratios Imaging metrics, such as ejection fraction and other percentages Sanne Mooldijk Jeremy Labrecque
