🎆 Hanindyo Kuncarayakti, a Docent and Research Council of Finland Fellow at the Turun yliopisto - University of Turku and his colleagues in Finland and Japan are studying the death events of stars, known as supernovae. The collaboration itself has already existed for the past several years, where they've conducted research on various time-domain astronomy and supernova-related topics, combining observational data analysis and theoretical calculations. ❄ Dr. Kuncarayakti's project uses LUMI to simulate the supernova explosion and interaction, which requires significant computational power. [ Research & Teaching Excellence | HKUST Researchers Boost Cosmological Explorations with Novel Method of Detecting High-Frequency Gravitational Waves in Planetary Magnetospheres ] Can we detect the tiniest ripples from cosmic events? A groundbreaking method of detecting high-frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) has been proposed by a research team led by Prof. Tao LIU, Associate Professor from the Department of Physics at #HKUST. The team's innovative approach may enable the successful detection of HFGWs by utilizing existing and technologically feasible astronomical telescopes in planetary magnetosphere, opening up new possibilities for studying the early universe and violent cosmic events in an effective and technically viable way. The research was published in Physical Review Letters in March and was subsequently highlighted by Nature Astronomy in an article titled “Planet-sized laboratories offer cosmological insights” in May. I am thrilled to share that my (first-ever) paper, "Emergence of the temperature-density relation in the low-density intergalactic medium", has been published in the esteemed Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS). I wrote this paper in collaboration with PhD Candidate David Robinson, Dr. Camille Avestruz, and Dr. Nick Gnedin over research that I completed through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Michigan last summer. In this paper, we examine the evolution of the phase diagram of the low-density intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization in simulation boxes with varying reionization histories from the Cosmic Reionization on Computers project. Our results indicate that the neutral fraction is a primary quantity controlling the various properties of the temperature–density relation, regardless of reionization history. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have explored such an interesting area of astrophysics, and to additionally learn about the paper-writing and publishing process, especially including the opportunity of being the lead author on this paper. This experience taught me so much of what goes into writing a paper as well as many other skills, which I hope to continue building throughout my career. Shrinivas R. Kulkarni, an Indian-origin professor at the California of Technology and renowned astronomer, has been honoured with the Shaw Prize in astronomy for his revolutionary discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects. The Shaw Prize, awarded annually in three categories—Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences—carries a monetary award of USD 1.2 million. This year marks the 21st year of the Prize, and the ceremony will take place on November 12 in Hong Kong. Joining Kulkarni in this year's distinguished list of laureates are Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin for Life Science and Medicine, and Peter Sarnak for Mathematical Sciences. Tokyo University of Science (#TUS) has recently released the digital archive of the special exhibition “Hisashi Terao, the first director of the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory.” Held at the Museum of Science, TUS, the exhibition commemorated the 100th death anniversary of Professor Hisashi Terao. The digital archive introduces the works and history of Prof. Terao, who laid the foundations of modern astronomy. Appointed in 1883, he was the first president of the Tokyo College of Science (forerunner of TUS) and the first director of the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory. This exhibition traced his journey both as a student and a teacher of mathematics and astronomy, featuring examples from astronomy he was taught as a student as well as handwritten notes from his astronomy lectures and other lectures at the Tokyo College of Science. Also on display was the portrait of Prof. Terao, which was painted by Viscount Seiki Kuroda and included in a memorial issue of The Astronomical Herald, which was published following Prof. Terao’s passing.
