If we’re going to #DitchtheDoom, to stop singing the « we’re doomed » song, we need to learn to harvest our creativity. Hope comes from creating new solutions. In this week’s #BoldInnovationWatch, I’m featuring Lanny Smoot, Disney Imagineer and only the second Disney employee to be inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame. (Walt was the first) You can read an interview with him in the attached article from the US Patent and Trademark Office. He holds an impressive number of patents—over 100 (I think it’s funny that he’s so likely to keep messing up their count by continuing to apply for patents that they just generalized the number in their article). With his many contributions to the magic at Disney, he has created innovations in display, interactive features, and entertainment design. Many of these innovations have inspired further innovation in the real world beyond the gates of the parks. THE HOLOTILE One of his recent inventions, Holotile, will, most likely, become a part of your life in the near future. These rolling tiles create a confined area that allows for real, natural movement while reacting to VR environments. You walk and pivot, the tiles roll in response, and you stay safely in place while wandering in your VR environment. No more smashing the lamp, crushing the TV, and scaring the cat as you dodge that terrifying dinosaur. Reporting about the tiles also suggests that dancers could use the tiles to perform their moves in place. I suspect it will also have a big impact on fitness activities, allowing for hiking miles in place in the confines of apartments and offices. Forget the standing desk attached to a treadmill (like the one I cobbled together in my office). Every standing desk perched in front of these tiles becomes a walking desk. Imagine the possibilities: + Taking a long walk with a friend who lives on the other side of the planet. +Exploring Machu Pichu without the altitude sickness. +Participating in a virtual protest march +Learning to ice skate in your living room. +Playing immersive games without the afrorementioned threat to people and items in arms reach. +Touring factories, inspecting sites, vetting real estate investments in tandem with managers, representatives, or sales people—actively getting your answers in real time while seeing for yourself. +Holding walking meetings that envigorate the participants and inspire elevated ideation. How will you move forward by safely, naturally, and virtually walking in place?
