#las24ed Our published paper can be accessed in the ACM Digital Library: https://lnkd.in/eSTpzefJ Co-authored with SRI education researchers Paul Burkander, Krystal Thomas, PhD, Jessica Mislevy, and Professor Renzhe Yu (lead author), Xiaoying Lin and Chengyuan Yao from the Teachers College, Columbia University, this paper presents preliminary findings from a rapid-cycle evaluation that tests two technology-supported instructional strategies (videos and prompts) designed to improve SRL in online learning. Using fine-grained clickstream data from 141 students across ten sections of five courses taught at a minority-serving community college, we generate measures of SRL behavior and correlate them with students’ exposure to tested strategies. Our results indicate modestly positive relationships between both videos and prompts and SRL behavior. In addition, prompts are more strongly correlated with SRL behavior for first-generation and female students than for their peers. These initial findings reveal the promise and complexity of implementing effective and equitable technology-supported interventions to develop SRL skills and mindsets among diverse student populations in online STEM education.
Join SRI Education on Friday, July 19, 2024, from 1:15-2:15 PM EST at the 2024 ACM Learning @ Scale Conference, held at the Global Learning Center (Georgia Institute of Technology). "Technology-Based Instructional Strategies Show Promise in Improving Self-Regulated Learning Skills at Broad-Access Postsecondary Institutions" will be presented by SRI EDU's Hui Yang, Paul Burkander, Krystal Thomas, PhD, and Jessica Mislevy, alongside Renzhe Y., Xiayoying Lin, and Chengyuan Yao of Columbia University. Day 7 of the 20-day learning challenge with Africa Agility Foundation I'll continue from where I stopped on day 5. I'll be talking about QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH 📒What is Qualitative Research? 🤔 Qualitative research differs from quantitative research in its objectives, techniques, and design. Qualitative research aims to gain insights into phenomena, groups, or experiences that cannot be objectively measured or quantified using mathematics. Instead of seeking to uncover precise answers or statistics in a controlled environment like quantitative research, qualitative research is more exploratory, drawing upon data sources such as photographs, journal entries, video footage, and interviews. 📑What is Quantitative Research? Quantitative research tackles questions from different angles compared to qualitative research. Instead of probing for subjective meaning by asking exploratory “how?” and “why?” questions, quantitative research provides precise causal explanations that can be measured and communicated mathematically. While qualitative researchers might visit subjects in their homes or otherwise in the field, quantitative research is usually conducted in a controlled environment. Instead of gaining insight or understanding into a subjective, context-dependent issue, as is the case with qualitative research, the goal is instead to obtain objective information, such as determining the best time to undergo a specific medical procedure. 💡How Does Qualitative and Quantitative Research Differ? In qualitative studies, data is usually gathered in the field from smaller sample sizes, which means researchers might personally visit participants in their own homes or other environments. Once the research is completed, the researcher must evaluate and make sense of the data in its context, looking for trends or patterns from which new theories, concepts, narratives, or hypotheses can be generated. Quantitative research is typically carried out via tools (such as questionnaires) instead of by people (such as a researcher asking interview questions). Another significant difference is that, in qualitative studies, researchers must interpret the data to build hypotheses. In a quantitative analysis, the researcher sets out to test a hypothesis. #20DaysinPDWithAA #GIT20DayChallenge #AfricaAgility #GITBootcampCohort #AfricanGirlsInTechBootcamp #GITBootcampC7Challenge

Data Entry Specialist | Microsoft Certified Power BI Data Analyst | MS Access Database | Excel | SQL | Database Manager | ALX Alumni
I am happy to share my overall learning journey with you! I’m a Cohort 2 Fellow (Data Analysis & Visualization) on the 3MTT Nigeria Programme, and it has been such a transformative experience! This journey has empowered me with a wealth of knowledge and skills across various domains, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. I recently completed courses on the 3MTT Nigeria Foundational Online Learning Content, which covered a wide range of courses in data analytics, professional soft skills, and generative AI. In the data analytics track, I learned from Robin Hunt, a renowned data enthusiast and expert in Excel, Power Query, PowerBI, and SQL. The courses covered foundational skills, data gathering, SQL queries, data cleaning, and visualization. The professional soft skills track, taught by various instructors, helped me develop essential skills like emotional intelligence, resilience, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. Additionally, I took courses in English for IT, Prompt Engineering, AI Productivity Hacks, Generative AI for Creative Content, and PowerPoint and Excel with Copilot. The Generative AI Essentials course, taught by Pinar Seyhan Demirdag, Ashley Kennedy, Nick Brazzi, Vilas Dhar, and Doug Rose, provided a comprehensive understanding of AI and generative AI, including its functionality, ethical considerations, and applications. I'm grateful for this learning journey, which has equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge to excel in my career. Thanks, 3MTT Nigeria for providing this great platform. #My3MTT #3MTTLearningJournal #3MTT #3MTTNigeria #DataAnalytics #ProfessionalSoftSkills #GenerativeAI #LearningJourney"

🌟 Micro-credentials: A New Way to Learn and Work 🌟 It takes many stakeholders working together to build a stronger Singapore and a more competitive workforce. In the recent CNA interview along with A/Prof Chong GUAN from SUSS Academy, we discussed the importance of collaborative efforts across institutes of higher learning. Achieving this vision will require a change of mindset, unity, and systematic efforts to create one cohesive ecosystem that offers more micro-credentials in partnership with industry. This approach caters to learners seeking just-in-time skills upgrading, especially in emerging skills areas. At Singapore Institute of Technology, we are proud to be part of the SkillsFuture movement, offering a suite of industry-recognized, competency-based micro-credentials. These programs prepare learners with practical skills and competencies they can apply at work, helping them stay relevant and ahead of the curve! 🚀 #MicroCredentials #SkillsFuture #LifelongLearning #WorkforceDevelopment #IndustryCollaboration #EmergingSkills #CompetencyBasedEducation #CBE
What’s the difference between a regular short course and a micro-credential? In this CNA interview, our very own A/Prof May Sok Mui Lim, Assistant Provost (Applied Learning), demystifies micro-credentials. Some highlights: - At SIT, joining a 2-day ‘AI in Broad Strokes’ course will give you an appreciation of AI. But to acquire the competencies that enable you to take on a specific job role, like data engineering, you would need to take up a micro-credential. At SIT, our micro-credentials lead to specialist certificates. - IHLs can work together in an ecosystem to recognise each other's micro-credentials to give learners more freedom in choosing how they want to learn and earn their qualifications. Together with A/Prof Guan Chong of Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), A/Prof May shares her perspective on how the standardisation of micro-credentials will benefit adult learners following an announcement by Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education, at this year’s SkillsFuture Festival Opening Forum, on harmonising the naming of micro-credentials, to enable learners and employers to easily understand their level and volume of learning.
